Actually the title was taken from a quote from a suspect in a school shooting but i always understood it was about a housewife who had a mental breakdown when her “programming” went haywire ,

I too thought it was a song about a suburban mother breaking down and killing her children, I thought the title was some sort of “Garfield” reference about the banal and mundane driving one cutesily insane. I’ve only heard Amos’ version.
