If it’s not too much effort, is there a way for a mod to tell us how many posters lasted more than, say, 2 years after having been suspended twice? I would suspect none (or next to none), which makes one wonder why a 2nd suspension even makes sense. If I’m wrong, then obviously it does.
Only if it would have changed his behavior. We didn’t see much evidence of that after the previous suspensions, so I don’t know what the point would be. The objective of warnings and suspensions is to change behavior. If it doesn’t, then there’s no point in imposing more of the same.
In BrainGlutton’s case, the first suspension was a short one. (I haven’t looked it up but it was a few days or a week.) I won’t say that we’ve never done it, but normally a second suspension is only imposed if the first one was short. (I won’t say that we would never do so, however. I might also see doing so if the first suspension was a long time earlier, but I can’t recall such a case.) Otherwise repeated warnings after a suspension normally result in a banning.
Because it takes repeated warnings to even get a suspension, most posters who get suspended end up eventually getting banned just because they’ve already demonstrated that they can’t modify their behavior. There are some exceptions, however (at least so far).

I think the number of posters who have been suspended twice is less than 5. My guess would be a total of two, including BG. When the 2nd suspension was handed down, there was much consternation about there even being a 2nd suspension because that was outside the regular practice, and because Terr was banned at the same time for seemingly less offensive behavior.
I’m also in the same boat, in all my years I got 3 warnings. 2 were rescinded, but one of those was not officially noted in the system as very quickly on the thread the moderator apologized as we were on the pit all along and not GD.
I may had a chance to even rescind the one remaining as a hijack of a thread was started by another poster but since I used a bazooka to kill a fly I think it was deserved.
This certainly has a logic to it, but it strikes me as similar to the logic of “three strikes” laws in criminal justice, which I don’t agree with. If it were up to me, and I know it’s not, I would be in favor of just continuing to suspend someone even if recidivism seems likely.

I would tend to agree at least as far as posters who really aren’t distruptive generally.

Right, like keeping the ratio in mind. If someone gets monthlong suspensions, then repeatedly comes back and flings feces against the wall with the very first post they make after being reinstated, then sure: shitcan them. But if they can be expected to contribute a few hundred reasonable posts for every one that violates the rules, and they’re not just blatantly trolling, then I’d be for just periodically slapping their wrists with suspensions, ad infinitum.
My guess would be much larger.
QED was suspended twice, once for insults and once for junior modding, IIRC.

It’s actually pretty small, but it would take more research than I think the question merits.
I looked at every thread with the word “suspended” in the title. Here is CK mentioning it.
Note that suspensions are a practice that appears to have started being used in wider practice in 2003 and I don’t think all were announced in ATMB religiously until sometime in 2005. That being said, after looking at the complete list of threads that match that criteria, I was wrong. I found a total of 6 users who had more than 1 suspension. BrainGlutton, Claude Remains, mswas, Q.E.D., Sailor, and Scissorjack all received 2 suspensions. For mswas, Claude, and Scissorjack, both suspensions were 1 month. Sailor’s first suspension was an unknown amount of time.
Most suspensions are 1 month, though there is one example of 60 days and one example of 3 days. A total of 112 unique users were found to have been suspended. I suspect the number is larger but there were no thread announcements - gum for example.

I really thought it would be faster to pull this together and about mid way through I thought I spent too much time but I was already invested. I was going to add another column to see how many posters who were suspended were later banned. Then I got lazy.
Heh, I was doing the same thing. It looks like you missed some threads - I found three additional ones: Alex_Dubinsky, gonzomax*, and Hail Ants, for a total of nine.
*Gonzomax’s second suspension was later rescinded.
Gah - I mistyped Alex’s name. doh. In any event, my speculation of 5 or less was wrong and now it’s more wrong.
