Trying to play the guilt by association card, are we? For shame.
Seriously, though, can anyone tell me when, if any other time, the KKK has held a victory parade for a President of the US?
I suppose Woodrow Wilson is the most likely, though I don’t know of an actual occurrence.
No. I expect acts of this nature as par for the course – after all racists and bigots are a significant constituency of Trump voters.
Surely that doesn’t come as news to a highly educated black Trump backer such as yourself.

Guilt by association? Hardly. These are your people, OP. Embrace them.
Black Democrats aren’t as monolithically liberal as liberals would like to think. My former neighbors were older, retirement age, and black. They’d talk about their inner city solutions and I’d be like “are you sure that’s not a bit too extreme?” and they were like “have you been to the inner city?”
They didn’t sound very left wing talking about forced sterilization of the poor. It was surreal that octopus had to be the voice of moderation lol.
…who is telling you this? It certainly isn’t me.
Did they have an accurate view of Hillary Clinton? No, IMHO they did not.
Would they have to jump through an excessive amount of hoops in today digital age to get the truth? IMHO yes they would. I’ve told you how hard it was for me to drill down what the email scandal was all about: and even when I found an article I struggled to understand bits of it. And I’m an internet god. I know how these things work.
Do I expect someone who works a ten hour day with a four hour commute who works a six day week to be able to jump through the hoops I did and then understand and trust the information they found? No I don’t.
Which is why we have journalism and the media. Its the job of the journalist to cut through the crap and to present the news in discernible byte sized chunks.
And the media fucking failed at their job. But that shouldn’t surprise anyone, because they have been fucking failing at their job for years. (I’m specifically calling out the “24 hour news networks” here, no necessarily print.) And they aren’t going to get better. So the answer (at least in the short term) is not to fix the media: but to get BETTER AT CONTROLLING THE MESSAGE. Its a horrible thought. It is an uncomfortable thought. But this is the new world we live in. This is the lesson we have learnt from Trump.
Well DUH.
What exactly did you expect them to do?
Well DUH.
Time has a current circulation of just over 3 million. Newsweek stopped printing in 2012. Of course they bloody well aren’t reading articles in Time or Newsweek.
I never really understood what was meant by the word “privilege” until it was explained here a couple of years ago on the dope. And I never understood what was meant by “the elite” until I started reading this thread.
Bryan: you are part of the elite. I’m talking about people who are working excessive hours, can’t afford to pay their bills, and are struggling every day to get through life. They are likely poorly educated, living in communities where the youth suicide rate is nearly double the urban rate*, where people aren’t like you and I spending hours debating points on the internet because we do this sort of thing for fun .
These are the people I’m talking about. You are blaming them because they don’t read fucking Time Magazine. What the fuck? Its no wonder they hate people like you and me.

Stop living in a fantasy world and come back to reality. Fox News didn’t make a difference this election. I watched plenty of Fox News this year (as well as the other networks: the advantage of living on the other side of the world) and the difference between coverage was not enough to be called significant. They were all as bad as each other: they will all continue to be as bad as each other, and things are not going to change.
It might comfort you to have to resort to stereotypes. But you are living in a fantasy world.
Well aren’t you lucky privileged elite mother fucker.
Well feel free to continue to be angry at these people. Seriously. But it isn’t going to help. But at least you get to be angry.
Oh I’m not going to convince you. You are a lost cause.
But there are plenty of people reading our exchange who are tired, angry, emotional, upset, and scared. I’m one of those people. I’m not going to reassure people and say “that everything is going to be all right” or that “maybe the Trump presidency isn’t going to be so bad.” Because it is going to be bad. We know this. We can see the people he is bringing together to be part of his regime. First there is going to be a purge of civil servants that are not going to be loyal to Trump. Then he will bring in his own people. Anti-science. Anti-immigration. Pro-corporates.
We, the elite: we know what is going to happen. If you think that the “checks and balances” are going to stop Trump from doing what he likes then you are mistaken. Just look what he has accomplished over the last two years. And he has hardly raised a sweat.
I’m going to do my part as much as I can. Off board I spent a lot of time fighting the gambergoobers and the alt right in their campaign to drive women and minorities off the internet. They had died down. I was relaxing, anticipating that a Hillary win would make them put their heads down. That aint gonna happen. So I’m doing what the rest of us are doing: getting ready to go into battle again. And that fucking sucks.
And over the last couple of hours I’ve made a decision on what I can do in real life to hold the line. I’m self employed. And tonight I’m going to be talking to my crew and laying a few things out. That I run a business that is committed to being a diverse multi-cultural workplace that is inclusive of all people of all races, cultures, sexual orientation, national origin and genders. And from today my business will actively look for ways we can support people from the LGBT communities and to support victims of sexual assault. I don’t know what those ways are going to be. I’m going to have to figure it out. But this is what we will do.
I live in New Zealand and I can’t do much more than that to stand in solidarity with the people of America. But this is how I will hold the line. And there are going to be plenty of people around the world holding the line as well. You aren’t alone in this America. The line will hold. But people of America: you need to figure out what to do next on your own. And it needs to happen fast.
I’m not going to engage you any further Bryan. It has taken this election to really wake me up to exactly how trivial arguing over the internet can be. Real people are suffering Bryan. And because of what happened a few days ago real people are going to suffer even more, and many are going to die. I know you are angry. I can only suggest you get over it, and quickly, and reset your targets to those that deserve it. Because if we don’t do that: then this already bad situation is going to get a hell of a lot worse.
Oh hey, look at that. Someone who gets it. It’s a little frustrating to hear “We have to take their concerns seriously” and “they’re not living in a fantasy” from people who them immediately concede that yes, they are in fact living in a fantasy and that their concerns are not worth taking seriously.
…It isn’t our fault you don’t have a fundamental understanding of the english language. If you read our post more carefully you will see that you are completely misrepresenting what we have said.
They aren’t living in a fantasy world: and their concerns are worth taking seriously. But America has bigger problems than worrying about these people. So just get over it already.
I disagree.
I disagree with that, too. I recognize that it’s easier to just take Fox News’s frequently repeated word for it, but there’s been a wiki page on the e-mail scandal since well before the election. It’d take just a few minutes to get the gist of it, with links to news articles about it which anyone can read if they sincerely thought it was important.
Uh, okay. But, y’know… wikipedia is right there.
I thought these people were supposed to be out of work, for the most part. Hence all that nothing-to-lose desperation that prompts a Trumpian “fuck the system” vote.
While I’m also happy to call out the media for doing a crappy job, I’m disinclined to hold the low-information voter blameless.
Actually, Newsweek resume print operations in 2014. In fact they just recently and embarrassingly had to recall thousands of issues with a “Madame President” cover.
And skimming the rest of your reply I see other mistakes (some of which are quite amusing), but also that you don’t want to continue this conversation, so… bye.
Yeah, there’s a certain condescension in it, isn’t there? I get the echo-chamber nature of modern communications, where anybody can isolate themselves in a comforting circle of like-minded friends and like-minded news sources, but you’d have to be pretty out to lunch to not see there were problems with Trump for months.
If it really was all about “fuck the system up and see what happens”, I can sort of sympathize, but anyone on the economic fringe who genuinely thinks Trump and the Republicans are going to make their lives better isn’t just low-information, but high-bad-information, and pretty forgetful of the events of the last decade.
I’d be happy to take their concerns seriously, but they gotta meet us partway at least.
Well, it kinda seems America’s newest and biggest problem is because of their fantasies, but what’s done is done, I guess.
For what it’s worth, I’m going to try to limit my prejudgement on what Trump does while in office - I’m going to try to not assume the worst possible interpretation of his mistakes and try to not downplay the value of his successes. I don’t think I’ll be able to watch his speeches, though - he irritates me on a personal level - but I’ll concede that even then, I may be labouring under a misconception. It’s possible that the various clips of him I’ve seen on the campaign were chosen for their bombastic or shocking sound-bite appeal, and for lengthier calmer speeches, he does okay. I’ve heard that his acceptance speech was one such example. I’ll try to watch it at least once before the inauguration.
Anyway, that’s just me going on record as saying I want to try to give Trump a chance. I don’t know if I’ll come to regret doing so at a later time.
Right, and of course the SDMB is a perfectly level playing-field for both threads and the first one to 5000 will definitively prove … What will it prove again? Oh, that’s right, that there are far more liberals here than conservatives.
Well, that’s worth doing then.
No one, and I mean no one, thinks that the post count in those threads will mean anything other than that people post there.
Loosen up; those threads will be fun just like the SRIOTD thread has been fun.
Well, if the threads aren’t overly padded with commentary, say every third post contains a cite to a reputable news source of a unique moment where Trump either did something positive or did something negative… I can see them being of moderate value. Of course, if either of them gets to 5000, I expect it’ll be the one critical of Trump, given the nature of this board and indeed the nature of the presidency, where failures are immediately obvious but successes might be silent or take years to come to light.
But prove anything…? No, of course not. I was being facetious, clearly.
Yes, if you take that single line out of what I said, and interpret it in the worst possible way, you can make my post seem “misguided.”
I am, even as much as I don’t want to, going to have to put up with Donald Trump in my head. I’m sorry, but you’re little needling doesn’t have room anymore.
Whatever this weird thing is has been “nice,” but I’m afraid we’re gonna have to break up.
BB, you are tearing up this thread!

Thank you so much for this. Truly. You don’t even live in this fucking country and you’re doing more than 90% of Americans bitching on the internet. I’ve done my share of internet bitching, but it brings a false sense of satisfaction. Today I wrote a $25,000 grant for sexual assault prevention education and being able to do that with my career is basically how I’ve learned to take all these sexist asshats in stride and obliterate their ignorance with a few keystrokes. Omg has the skills to play his tiny invisible violin of mockery; I have the skills to create hundreds and thousands of dollars to make a difference for 30,000 sexual abuse and domestic violence survivors a year.
We need to be doing things. Coordinated, strategic things.
Oh, yes. I’m mocking the liberals in full meltdown mode who are engaging in straight up histrionics. Has Trump ever sexually abused anyone? I do believe we’ve only ever had one sexual abuser in the Oval Office and-- surprise surprise-- Democrats/liberals/progressives love him, defend him and make excuses for him!
Gooooooooo figure!
Has Trump ever sexually abused anyone?
He bragged about committing sexual assault, and has been accused of sexual assault by various women since 1992, and we have video of him forcibly kissing someone who clearly doesn’t want it, so I’d say the odds are pretty good.
That’s charmingly naive. FWIW I’d never defend Clinton’s actions either. I can’t fucking stand that man. Even leaving aside his rapey behavior (which it should be obvious I cannot do), he is responsible for two of the worst policies in recent history.
Look, I’m as shocked as anyone that a “hurrrh-durrrh yay Trump! DERP!” thread started by you produces something resembling intelligent discussion, and I realize how disorienting and alienating that must be to you in particular, but let’s just keep calm and try to ride it out, shall we?
