I don't think I've ever seen a Pit thread locked

Is locking threads in the Pit to be a thing now? Are we protecting posters who can’t manage to avoid drawing almost universal fire for their posts?

Care to share a link so the rest of us can play along w/ you?

Pit threads are often locked when the subject of the pitting is banned.

I think the OP just be referring to this thread.

I thought Miller’s reasoning was sound:[

Sure they have been locked before. In this case it was because it was a redundant thread. Usually it’s because either the OP or target of the Pitting were banned. Sometimes it’s because someone looked at Miller cross eyed.

How can it be redundant? While the two threads may be on the same topic, that standards for discussion are vastly different between the Pit and the other forums.

Both of the threads were in the pit by the same OP on the same topic. I’ve got no issues with removing one to help deal with some of the clutter caused by Trump.

They are both in the Pit…

I’d say three of them are in the Pit.

If you haven’t seen Pit threads locked, you can’t spend much time there. I count seven locked Pit threads in the last two months.

As has been said, it’s always been our practice to close Pit threads after the subject or the OP have been banned, since they can no longer respond. That’s the case for 5 of the 7 locked threads in the past two months.

Otherwise you’ll have to explain what you mean by “protecting posters.” The most recent thread that was closed was because it was by the same poster on the same topic as a currently active one, and wasn’t deemed to be sufficiently different to merit a new thread. The same poster has four other active threads on the first page, and certainly isn’t being protected in any way.

Because it was clearly spamming. Multiple posts on the SDMB with the same topic* has always been considered spamming. It’s been a warnable and even bannable offense in the past.

*In this case, the exact same topic.

Good call on Miller’s part. The new thread was NOT substantively different from the one she started a week or so ago.

Okay. I missed the duplicate part… and there was no mod note at the end.

Not sure how I missed locked threads in the Pit. Not looking,I guess.

Not the most observant fellow today, are you?

You can observe a lot by watching.

Just a thought.

Thought thunk.

I didn’t mean the OP. There being no other context, I wondered if… a contrarian poster was being shielded from due abuse.

I honestly can’t imagine why this would be your first thought on why the thread was closed. Of course, as has been pointed out there was plenty of context, including a mod note explaining the reason and a similar thread by the OP on the same page. While there are a few posters who might be described as “contrarian” in the thread, we’ve never “shielded” any of them from abuse that I can recall.

In what possible sense is someone on this board who really, really hates Donald Trump a “contrarian?”

They only hate him with the power of 999,999 suns instead of 1,000,000 suns?

I think he means a pro-Trump poster who was criticizing the OP in that thread.

Ignoring the 10,000 similar posts on which we took no action.:dubious:
