The recent Legos thread and the evil influence of my girlfriend resulted in a trip to Toys R Us in search of cool Legos. Darth Vader did catch my eye, I admit, and I nearly bought him. However, I grabbed two of the recent “Oriental Adventure” (or something like that) Lego sets instead. Mine feature a large tiger-man, along with two of my favorite Lego men ever: one a dapper looking British explorer chap with the white safari hat and spiffy bowtie and the other an evil looking–obviously British–chap with a tophat, eye patch, hook, and spiffy 1920s era Lego car. I also got a Lego elephant.
I also spied something very cool that made me say “Huh?” Apparently, there is (was) a line of collectable silent film monster action figures. They were marked down to $2.50, so Dr. Caligari and the Count from Nosferatu now join my little Lego band. I can’t believe someone thought silent film monsters would be a big hit. Not that I’m complaining.
And has anyone else seen the toys you can get nowadays? There were some huge Tiger Tank, Corsair, and other World War II type things over by G.I. Joe (GI Joe is back, apparently) that sorely tempted me. And Masters of the Universe is back.
Everyone else knows this, I’m sure, but it was fascinating to me.
I know exactly how you feel. It seems the toys just keep getting cooler as I hurtle toward old age. It was when Mattell came out with “Mermaid Barbie” that I really gnashed my teeth. When I was a little girl, I wanted Mattell to make a Mermaid Barbie for the longest time. I think they waited so long just to spite me.
And where was that “password locked” diary when I was a kid, huh?
Mmmm…Legos! I love Legos. I’m 25 and still buy and play with all sorts of toys. I think half the reason I became a preschool teacher was so that I’d have someone to play with.
My most recent Lego set is the Harry Potter Hogwarts Express set. I really want to complete it with the school, Hagrid’s hut, etc, but these sets are kinda pricey.
I am nannying a little boy for the summer. So I will have a playmate for 3 whole months!

One of my older brothers still gets Legos for Christmas every year. He’s 32 (maybe 33…I forget. Well, he could be 34, but I don’t think so.)
This year was the bomb though. We all got Legos. Race cars with motors - we all got to assemble them and have races.
I am, however, challenged by Legos. I had to have assistance putting them together. I’ve just never gotten Legos. They frustrate me. So, with some assistance from my older & younger brother, mine finally managed to be put together. Then we raced. I cheated (I wound the engine secretely and quietly. Then I caught my older brother doing the same thing.)
I forgot to mention “Mega-Bloks”. I picked up a frickin Mega-Bloks Aegis Destroyer for $15. And these guys make castles that lack the understated elegance of my old Lego castles, but are very, very cool.
I like MegaBloks. The quality isn’t as good as Lego, sometimes the pieces pop apart after I’ve spent several finger-destroying minutes forcing them together, but the figures are good. I have all the Dragon sets, except for the one that can be used as a chess/checkers set. I saw it once, but couldn’t afford it at the time, and I haven’t seen it since.
I’d highly recomment replacing that song with Tom Waits’ “I Don’t Wanna Grow Up” (or the Ramones’ cover of it) - it’s a much better song to have stuck in your head.
And toys rule, especially Legos. For one of my design classes for undergrad, we actually got to play with legos as part of a few projects. I loved that. Who says anything about having to grow up, anyway? I think it’s way overrated. The only advantage is you can eventually afford bigger and more expensive toys…
I was so excited when my parents bought me my own remote controlled tank for christmas one year. I’d been looking for one everywhere and could never find one. I was 20 when I received it. My mom, dad, and husband still buy me toys for Christmas, and for whatever reason. My mom gave my husband this really neat remote controlled scorpion-thingy that stings and fights. I think I’ve got more cool toys now than I ever did as a kid. Now if I can only figure out who broke the RC hovercraft – that sure was fun to play with in the pool.
…
I’m gonna put a hole in my T.V. set
I don’t wanna grow up
open up the medicine chest
and I don’t wanna gow up
I don’t wanna have to shout it out
I don’t wanna be filled with doubt
I don’t wanna be a good boy scout
I don’t wanna have to learn to count
I don’t wanna have the biggest amount
I don’t wan-na grow up
…
Yeah, me neither.
I’m jealous of you guys and your Legos. I’ve lost all mine.
Dude, you should come over to my house sometime and see my room. DOLLS everywhere-Barbies, Star Wars, Titanic, Anastasia, etc.

I don’t know if it’s a game so much as it’s a fascinating way to doodle . . . I found a Spirograph at a thrift store and paid $8.00 for it. I remember it from my childhood and was thrilled to see it again.
They’re actually rereleasing all the cool stuff from my childhood. I saw all kinds of “new” G.I. Joe vehicles that I had in their original incarnations, Masters of the Universe stuff, Lite Brite, etc.
