Why is it currently nigh-impossible to purchase a television or a stereo in a finish other than silver? Is this just one of those fashion fads that’s going to go away? Will I ever be able to buy a matte black piece of home electronics again?
Spare me your technicalities and meanderings about how there are still some black items available. Invariably they exist only to taunt me, and the model I want is only available in wipe-my-robot’s-ass silver.
“Wipe-my-robot’s-ass” silver? So… how do you really feel about today’s TVs?
The TV makers only want to color-coordinate with your home town of Silver Spring.
I’m sure TVs will swing back to black in a while. Or perhaps woodgrained plastic, harking back to the console sets of the 1970s. But, the big complaint about black TVs was that they were this Big. Black. Box. in the living room. And they showed dust. So, the makers lightened up and went silver.
Your best bet is likely going to be either painting it like bughunter suggests, or hide as much as possible of it in a cabinet.
Mine’s black. Just got it, too. About 3 months ago. To replace my older, smaller black TV. It sits a little back in my dark ET center, making it appear as if the picture just shows up from nowhere.
Okay, I’m easily impressed.
But, where the hell are you shopping that only has silver TVs? At Best Buy just today, I saw silver, black, woodgrain, and even one in various colors (red, blue, green, yellow, white… you only get one at a time. not multi color single sets, but rather, individual sets available in those colours.)
Mine’s black too. I had a devil of a time finding it. I finally got the model I wanted in black. I was just confounded by the fact that the only 20" TV with a DVD player but not a VCR built in was silver. Just silver.
As for Silver Spring, I think the low-rent commercial block that mysteriously went up in flames was probably a developer in cahoots with a clever owner. I’m thinking arson. In any case, those buildings are quite black now.
And NoClueBoy, I also love the picture-within-a-black-hole effect of my gigantic black widescreen.
