A slight hijack: I didn’t watch any Buffy when it was first broadcast, but I got interested later. I purchased all seven seasons on DVD and watched every episode in order.
My wife and I have been thinking about starting over and going through the whole thing again. I’ve never seen a single episode of Angel. Should we:
- Watch Angel all the way through before restarting Buffy
- Skip Angel completely
- Interleave Angel and Buffy as we go through our 2nd Buffy pass
I’d go ahead & watch Angel all the way through. THEN “interleave” them. I haven’t done that yet, since I didn’t get Season I of Angel when the new (cheaper) sets came out.
Interweave them. When both shows were on the same network back to back, several times they told an extended story. So Option #3 is the way to go here.
What we did when we watched them for the first time is to interweave seasons, not individual episodes. But now I don’t remember which seasons correspond where.
Oh, and I actually think “Angel” was the better show, so I definitely don’t vote that you skip it.

Just as a side note: When you get to This Year’s Girl/Who Are You, you will see evidence that SMG can indeed act. Both she and Eliza Dushku are magnificent in these episodes, each playing the other actress playing her character (in other words, SMG(Buffy) is playing Eliza Dushku(Faith) playing Faith.) There’s this whole body-swapping thing going on…
