I downloaded Photoshop, now all my jpegs open in Photoshop.

Now that we’ve got all that resolved… Could you please explain why you don’t want to view your jpgs in Photoshop? Seems like the optimal place to open my jpgs. I wouldn’t use anything else to view or manipulate graphics or photos.

DISCLAIMER: I’m in desktop publishing and do this for a living. Just trying to understand why someone who is not a professional in this field, but has the same software applications as a professional in this field, would choose not to use the best possible way to view the files.

Happily, this has been solved for Road Rash, but I have a further question: Could this have also been solved through reassociating the files? Is that basically what “Opens with” does?

For example, in the past if I had a similar problem I’d open WinFile (which still exists on Windows machines) and navigate to the file whose association I want to change. I click on Associate from the File menu (I think) and choose the application with which I want to open all files with that extension. So if my JPGs were opening in IE and I wanted them to open in ImageView, I’d click on a JPG file, choose Associate, and then select ImageView, and voila! All done.

This is the same as using the “Opens with,” isn’t it?

Maybe it’s because Photoshop is an editor, and not a viewer? And probably because it takes about 45 seconds to open up.

That’d be my reasoning, and is why I use ACDSee.

I can’t speak for the OP, but I’d love nothing more than for Photoshop to be my default image viewer, but the 30 second load time is something of a downside. Not all of us have graphics workstations ;).

:smack: Now I really have egg on my face. I was thinking that Photoshop would be too large for people to want to download, but I should have known better than that, since I know that multi-CD Linux distros are available via download. Sometimes I forget just how ubiquitous broadband has become.

Okay, that’s it, no more junior modding for me.

Yep, exactly. There are a few different ways to change file type associations, including directly editing the Registry, but for my money, Open With is by far the safest and most convenient way to go.

There is a lag in opening items in Photoshop, which is a nuisance. The main reason is that I am very new to photoshop and have a lot to learn. When I get more proficient, I may decide to make it my default picture opener.

Download or install? Yes, I was using the words interchangeably. I installed it from a CD. As far as an implication of illegal activity, a download or an install can both be done illegally, so one term should have no greater implication of illegal activity than the other.

Except that downloads are FAR more likely to be illegal. The implication is clearly greater.

I never thought that download and install were interchangable terms. I can download something and never install it. I can download something that cannot be installed (like a pdf file). I can only install things that are programs (.exe files or dmg files, for instance). So that’s why there’s the confusion. In my mind, if you installed something from a CD, it’s confusing to use the term download. Because it doesn’t seem like you downloaded anything at all—you just installed it.

Anyway, to get proficient on Photoshop, I recommend some good Photoshop tutorials (Planet Photoshop would be one) and some good Photoshop books. I like Photoshop books written by Deke McClelland or Scott Kelby, myself. The Down and Dirty Tricks books were always very helpful to me.

With some programs, you can download them to your heart’s content - but they won’t install without purchasing info being entered.
