Drastic, unnuanced cost cutting is the “slash and burn agriculture” of the financial world. Short term (for values of short) success, long term destruction and despair.
I despair of the human condition that we keep believing and electing these sorts as a species.
Human nature is to hope that the right answer, to whatever ails you, is the one where YOU won’t have to pay for it. “ It cannot be impossible! SOMEONE has got to eventually deliver the promise of a good life with no taxes at some point, because we KNOW that’s how it should be! “
Dollar at 1500 pesos now, we are back in the slide.
Bonds falling…
The president accuses one bank (doesn’t specify what bank but it’s supposed to be Macro Bank) of being behind the run on the peso for political reasons…
The fact that there is an estimate of 13 billion dollars in soy waiting to be sold until the dollar reaches a more favorable rate is somehow a surprise to these free market geniuses, who expected the soy oligarchs to lose money just because of ideological sympathies…
Idiots.
These people (the great landowners) have NEVER in their entire existence acted against their own interest, it’s the rest of us who have to do so because this is their country, we are just the help.
While I’m glad you’re ahead of the the trends, I’m just worrying (in general) about you and your family being able to ride this out. Since we’re still in the getting worse phase, with not a whole lot of seeing “before it starts to get better”.
And you already pointed out that you personally are a lot more secure than most.
So, from your (and what little international reporting we get) mentions, the insulated wealthy are preserving their assets, the poor are doing their best to hold on, the economy is steadily declining, and the government already did the slash and burn of “cost cutting” - which is only going to make things worse going forward.
So what is the government claiming is going to happen next? That magically things will get better? That the “they” is sabotaging them? Because, historically, soon they’ll need a scapegoat. Which is when things tend to get extra ugly.
Thanks! I appreciate it
Our family history since my great-grandfather came here from Poland (20 years or so before a pogrom killed all his relatives) shows that we’ve survived lots of coup d’ etats, bombings (my grandfather worked about a block from the Pink House when the navy air arm entered combat for the first time… bombing the president ), hyperinflations (that’s plural), economic crashes, genocidal right-wing dictatorships…
Let’s hope our luck continues to held
They were expecting and/or touting a V-shaped recovery, in the second semester…
Now they are talking about L shaped “recovery” and the need to give them some time…
I worry about scapegoats too, Argentinians believe themselves above racism (and boy are we wrong about that) but it’s true that we don’t have (much of) a history of scapegoating racial minorities, a worrying (but far-off IMHO) possibility is a return of right-wing military authoritarianism to keep a lid on things before they explode.
I am frightened. “Vice President Trump?” And he didn’t wince an cover his eyes and correct himself.
I believe Reagan was diagnosed as having Alzheimer’s for much of his last term. “Casperger, Nicauraga, Iran” I have no recollection. Yet that was not on video and he’d likely still look believable.
Joe Biden has to. Absolute has to, step down in whatever graceful way he can. Nixon did it. Reagan should have.
Sure, “Vice Fudking Preident Trump” will issue multiple racist and sexist statements about Harris yet dammit, she’s all we’ve got…
Errr, this thread is about the other country were fascists are gaining power, yours still has a chance in November to keep them out of the main levers of government.
As I’ve said, the country was over when Trump won in 2016. We had a slight reprieve which I didn’t see, but the supreme court is greasing the wheels for the dictatorship.
