I fear I'm about to lose my country

Ah, yes, everything related to nobility, food and heraldry is French in English. My excuses, i was not concentrated on the right stuff when writing this abridged and personal rendering of the article. Very unprofessional, but I care less and less about work.

Sorry, I see it is not funny when you are directly concerned. Surrealism is not so funny when you live in it, I am watching from afar.

Although the praetorians also killed a few emperors as well, when not paid enough.

Oh, true. But once you have the ‘guard’ or military selecting who will rule, even if they purge some that don’t respect (see pay) them, it is still a deadly blow for representative government.

Agreed. Just saying that maybe Donald and Meili shouldn’t be too excited about having their own Praetorian Guards.

You have to find the funny even when directly concerned, it’s the only way to go on (or at least it’s the argentinian way).
I had to stop reading because I was too angry at someone stupid enough not to realize the economic policies that ruined his family are the same (but less extreme!) than the economic policies espoused by his idol.

Wackos gonna wack. It’s a worldwide problem.

The sadness is the number of people (from whichever country) who have been converted into wackos by deliberate professional relentless propaganda. We condemned the Soviet Union for using their psych hospitals / insane asylums as instruments of state abuse of the public. This is no different from that.

2 new charming initiatives by the Milei Maladministration:

  1. A xenophobic push to restrict immigration and charge foreigners for (up to now free) health and education.
  2. An push to deregulate gas station rules and allow self-serving, which will probably result on all gas stations firing employees and moving to self-service (this is trivial compared to the other, but I was just yesterday reading this thread feeling pity for the barbarian wastelands of the USA where you have to pump your own gas…) Mileites truly love the worst things about the U.S. and are hellbent on importing them.

Also, remember the “Omnibus law”? the key peronist senator who turned his coat and voted for it was just arrested crossing the Paraguayan frontier with 200000 undeclared dollars, I really really wonder where did that money come from? a mistery we’ll never solve…

So, this band of suck-ups we have in the government have decided to follow their idol’s lead and leave the W.H.O.
And the worst part is, as I said to my wife, that the U.S. can leave the W.H.O. and it’s debatible if the W.H.O. or the U.S. will be most badly affected, in our case there’s no doubt, it will be Argentina.

Somebody in Bluesky was saying “I don’t know what’s worse, the health consequences of this decision or that it’s taken just to suck up to Trump”.
I wouldn’t go that far but it sure rankles.

I saw that piece of news and thought of you. :face_exhaling:

Side question. We’re barely into early days of 47s destruction of America, and of course, “unforeseen” (by his idiot supporters) consequences for some of them, but of course, they’ll shuck and jive to ignore the blame.

Milei and his ilk have had power longer, albeit (and this makes me  ) with MORE obstructionism by government and the populace, and other than a few “bumps” from basically dumping government services (trends my friends, friends) I haven’t seen signs of actual improvement, more the obvious.

But as stated upthread, it’s hard to get any sort of detailed info from BBC or American news on what’s going on past a couple of soundbites. Is there any feeling of buyer’s regret from Milei’s supporters? Any feeling that things are getting better, or is it just (as I tend to expect) his friends, supporters, and close allies leeching away while things get worse for 99.9% of the rest?

A bit but not enough, asphyxiating the economy has stopped inflation and that’s enough for them, for now.
Historical precedent (the 90’s) indicate that they’ll continue to sing his praises until the whole house of cards goes down and then it’s “All politicians are the same”.

So this seems like a total fiasco. What’s the local perspective?

I was going to post something about this but was too busy during the week and to tired yesterday.

I don’t know how the majority of the voting public feels about this, I’ve given up on trying to understand how their minds work.

Among my circles?:

  • General pointing and laughing at the idiots who trusted in this conman.
  • Relief that this time the scam is only affecting the idiots who trusted the conman instead of all of us.
  • Hope that this could lead to impeachment (don’t bet on it)
  • Hope that there could be US citizens among the scammed and that they would sue the conman ending in the bastard finally meeting some consequences. (I think this is naive).

This is a joke by the way, the president is going to designate someone to investigate the president and report to the president…

The Sunday newspaper’s front pages seem to be taking this seriously, which is promising, may be he’s losing the cover of the establishment media, or their moderate right wing managers.
There’s a fight for places in the legislative lists in the election in October between Milei’s party and the more traditional right wing, they still haven’t confirmed if they sre going to go as one party or several, this would be ammunition for the trad right in that fight.

So what’s Rioplatense Spanish for “rug pull”?

We are currently in the process of determining just that, we “pride” ourselves on being experts on all kinds of scams, so there must be an already-in-use term, but if not we need to invent a new one stat, (and then pretend that it has been in use for ages).

(I appreciate that you can maintain your sense of humor, however wry and dark it may be, despite everything that’s happening.)

I credit @frodo and his people for keeping their sense of humor more intact than I’ve managed for Trump 2.0.

Even my graveyard humor is getting more graveyard and less humor by the day.

We have practice, long long years of practice.

Apparently lots of the most annoying cryptobros, and other related scum, that usually vociferously defend Milei in social media lost a lot of money in this scam.
If I die of a schadenfreude overdose know that I loved you all very much.
