I am a cross country runner. Ever since the season started three weeks ago, I have been experiencing a cold sensation (mainly in my trunk) and chills when I run. The weater is usually above 90 degrees Fahrenheit and humid; I can feel the heat on my skin and I perspire a good amount. I drink lots of water and I don’t drink pop or eat junk food. I don’t feel dizzy or like I’m going to pass out when I run. This is my fifth year doing cross country, so running is nothing new to me. I experienced the cold feeling last year, but my coaches told me it was nothing to worry about.
I run a warm-up for about ten minutes, stretch for another 10-15, and then I begin my workout; I start feeling cold about 10 minutes after I start the regular workout. The coldness increases when I stop running and start walking. I am back to normal about 15-20 minutes after I stop. Drinking water afterward helps.
I have talked to my coaches, my mom, and a registered nurse on a telephone hotline. No one can tell me what is wrong; most have guessed that I’ve been experiencing heat exhaustion (one idiot coach told me to wear more clothes when I run so I wouldn’t feel cold, but that’s another story).
Does anyone know what’s wrong with me? I have a meet tomorrow (I run at 11 AM - the hottest part of the day) and I am hesitant to participate in it until I find out what’s the matter. Thank you very much to all who reply!
Being an idiot, I’ll take a guess at this. I spent a few years studying thermogenesis, but it was a while ago, and Qadgop or his ilk will probably be along with a definitive answer shortly.
Are you doing your warm-up in an air conditioned area and then going out into the heat ?
If so, you may be experiencing the sensation of your body adjusting its rate of thermogenesis to the change in temperature. When body temperature differs from the “set point” in the brain, you’ll feel hot or cold until your core temperature is warmed or cooled to whatever temperature your brain thinks it should be.

wow. It’s awesome to know that I’m not a freak of nature. Well, I still may be, but at least Squink is as well! I usually get that sensation during the summer months (the hot ones, nothing to do with calendar). I’m not sure what causes it, but i once had a problem with ruptured capillaries in my urinary tract. I don’t know if the 2 are related, I didn’t think to ask at the time. Hopefully someone will know and put both our minds to ease.
I too was a cross country runner. 16.75 best time. I also was a marathoner.
I used to get profoundly cold on my inner arms (just inside the biceps) on extended runs. Also I would experience a wierd numbness in my right thigh (I could stick a needle in it)but no diminishing of function.
You have seen a doctor and you seem to be warming up properly. My guess is its just normal for you.
Make sure you see a doctor if anything else weird happens.
