I feel in the mood to draw some ASCII art.

It might be cheating, but reducing the size of the smilies to 1/3 would increase detail by 9…
Thanks for the link! Now I really must install WINE on this machine…

Hey Shiva, check this out.
Found a really nice one for Linux, and free.
Click on one of the sample images.
Long download, but, um, interesting…

Ok, after taking liberties with Smilie size and color I came up with this:

My apologies to Picasso and the people of Spain.

I’m off to check your link now, Kyb.

Very nice. And you can almost make out the smilies :stuck_out_tongue:
BTW, if you have GIMP 1.1 (available for windows too) or higher, it now comes with a plug-in for photomosaic effects.

Here’s my attempt with GIMP 1.1.32 and the GIMP photomosaic plugin.

Yes, I cheated and greyscaled the smilies. :stuck_out_tongue:

Ok, grayscaling is an acceptable evil.
Now how about some color!?

I’m having trouble picturing Pablo with a pallette consisting of just black and white paint.

The Worlds Best Guernica Smiley Painter (so far)

Close friggin’ tags.

No, no, no… You can’t just make a jpeg mosaic of the smileys, it has to be smileys assembled on the board!

Which means, of course, that you’re stuck with the board colors and sizes

I do believe I’ve now seen everything.

That’s what I suspected… Which meant I’d have to write the interpreter program myself - which is why I asked Eutychus55 for how many spaces (for using “.” as filler) a smiley takes up, and what RGB values he wanted a smiley to represent.

Kyberneticist, if you REALLY have this much spare time, you can come over and clean my house. Or catalog my books. Or answer a Staff Report or two.

Lynn

Considering what Guernica is intended to represent, seeing it done with smilies by turns amuses the hell out of me, and/or adds yet another layer of meaning to Picasso’s work which is fun to ponder.

This is getting fun. For further enlightenment on Guernica, see here: http://metatext/demo-pages/art/guernica.htm

Hmmmm… Grief stricken mother and Fallen Warrior with Broken Sword would be some useful smilies…

::Racking a round into the chamber and holding the piece to my temple::

Please! Make the smilies go away!!!

Euty, you bastard.

People find time to do ASCII art? Hey ChiefScott, will you do an ASCII drawing of your ship and a flight deck load of aircraft too?

Euty, maybe we can all start doing renditions of ChiefScotts ship in smilies!

Um, Shiva, you do realize that the original Guernica is in shades of grey, right? Or did I just get whooshed?

::Turning the 9mm on Fletch::

Thems fightin’ words, pard.

Well, I’ve never seen the original. Do you think it’ll come to NYC or Philly anytime soon?

The images I’ve seen online are not pure grayscale. I work with what I’m dealt.

I can be snotty now that I’m a world famous artist, right?

OK, OK - look at this:

Set a small font, full-screen the browser, step back from the monitor, and squint!

(I once had a live webcam set up like that, for my friends who used Lynx)

Guernica - Here is my rendition

(sorry for the 1 x 1 resolution, but I have an old monitor)
