Kyberneticist, the pedant.
Grr.
Forgot vB standards. Would some moderator be kind enough to fix those <code> <,>'s to [,]'s? If not, I WILL repost it.

This should be a straight line, no gaps.
I fear this thread might end up in ATMB…
I will not be satified until someone posts a full sized rendition of Picasso’s “Guernica” made completely out of smilies.
This sounds like an interesting challenge. Full size? What resolution?
So what I need, then, is a program that takes a bitmap of guernica, and converts it using the smiley colors shown before (the smiley bouquet).
Doesn’t sound that difficult…
Tell ya what. You get me the following information.
A) how many spaces a smiley takes up.
B) which smileys you want to use, and to represent which colors.
C) location of a photo of guernica online.
And I’ll see what I can do about that rendering.
The most difficult part, as I see it, will be which way to go with colors that are halfway. But GIMP may already have an algorithm to reduce an image to a small set of colors.

Testing my little pedant without code tags, so in a variable width font. Does it still have the stupid extra linebreaks?
Hey! That’s a damned nice, ummm, octopus?

And now I’m all spotty.
Yes, I am essentially using MPSIMS to test the message board. But it is sorta MPSIMS. Especially if someone finds me a link to guernica.

Now I know why no one does ASCII art on this board…
Too time consuming.
Or maybe it is just netscape screwing up? hmmm.
Yay! I understand!
UncleBeer, it appears that SDMB’s software renders the interior of code tags as follows
<pre>
line<br>
</pre>
In Internet Explorer, that looks fine. Internet explorer ignores the <br>'s in a <pre> tag.
Now, I’m using Netscape 4.72, and it seems that it not only literally parses whitespace, as it is supposed to do in <pre> tags, it also adds an extra line for the <br>.
Could someone submit a bug report, asking that the software be changed so that it doesn’t insert <br>'s inside the “code” tag?
Oh, and Eutychus55, I checked. GIMP will indeed allow me to index a photo using a custom pallette that I can make match the smileys precisely.
Get me what I wanted, and I’ll get to work on your smiley guernica…
Sorry Shiva, you beat me in while I was experimenting with IE.
Ok, I now have an image - want to tell me which smileys I should use, and what colors in the image they should represent?
Well, the mural isn’t all that colorful. I see lots of Smiles, Winks, and Happy Orthodox Jewish Men.
Where ya gonna find Black Smilies though?
Hey, it wasn’t my idea.
Maybe a psychadelic guernica, or a photonegative guernica?
Look, I got a kick-ass Pentium III 550 MHz VooDoo 3D Entertainment Central Computer here on my desk. And you nerds expect me to draw ascii gerbils??
Weirdos
Hm. An armadillo armed with a javelin? Ramming speed!

Congrats, Rysdad! That goes on my sig next week.
Ladies and Gentlemen, allow me to present Guernica de los smilies

Viewing Tip: Squint really, really hard.
Wow. I’m obviously not squinting hard enough.
How’d you do it?

After I get this leaky drain fixed I’ll muck around with the settings and see if I can’t get something vaguely recognizable.
