Took some cough medicine that said “May cause drowsinesss”. Today’s the first day I’ve taken it that I wasn’t at home sleeping. I feel like I’m floating, things are moving slow and I’m moving slow. I get the sense that things I’m looking at are farther away than they appear, which is pretty close. Is this what being drunk feels like? I’ve never been drunk
That stuff makes me feel like I’m not in my body per se, but merely controlling it from afar. Or like I’m sitting up in the head and driving my body around.
I feel for you.
That’s not really how I feel when I’m drunk. Is the cough medicine Dextromethorphan? It’s a dissociative, if you take a lot of it (or if you’re really sensitive to it, I guess) you can have an out of body experience. Sounds like you’re dissociating a little bit.
Its Promethazine DM
Sounds like what happened to me when I ran out of the ‘day’ section of my day and night flu medication and took some of the ‘night’ pills before going on a power walk with friends.
Weird, kinda fun, kinda not.
Dissociative is a very good way of describing it. PetW.
Get yourself somewhere safe and enjoy the ride while it lasts.
Drunk is different for me, I’m very much there, it’s just the critical filter is turned off and everystupidthing seems like a very good idea.
Yeah, the DM stands for Dextromethorphan. Some people (ab)use it recreationally for its dissociative effects. Known as Robo-tripping, because Robitussin has DXM and also you tend to walk like a robot when on it.
You should probably take smaller doses of it next time. I’ve heard using DXM recreationally is really damaging to the brain.
I’ve had that feeling from medicine. In fact, I have a cold right now, and stayed home today in part because I wasn’t sure how I would react to the meds I picked up. Of course, I also didn’t want to get my co-workers sick.
When I get like that, my mind seems to be a bit slow…and yeah…dissociated. I really hate that feeling.
For me, at least, it’s nothing like being drunk.

I haven’t taken the Dextromethorphan, but found out the hard way that I can’t take the combo Mucinex with both guaifenesin and pseudoephedrine. Makes me really dizzy - like can’t really walk without assistance! Not pleasant at all. I can take each drug individually, though.
The promethazine is an antihistamine, so it can probably make you feel drowsy/floaty, like Benadryl. Combined with the DXM I don’t doubt that it packs a wallop.
The feeling you’re having is probably more similar to an opiate buzz than to being drunk. Being drunk feels more energetic (at first), bubbly, and funny.
I got some of that a couple weeks ago after being diagnosed with bronchitis. I am glad the pharmacist explained that it really was not to be used except at night; it knocked me right the hell out.
I stopped using it during the day. The doc prescribed it for my cough, which is almost gone, so I’m not taking it 4 times daily as recommended. She said I could stop once the cough stops. I think I’ll use it tonight before bed, then tomorrow night if I still have some cough. I can’t work with that thing in me during the day, so if I cough a little, that’s what I’ll have to deal with.
People get high off that? Ugh, I’d be a terrible drug user, I didn’t like that feeling at all. I’d ask for a drug that lets me feel more normal
DM doesn’t affect me at all (at least at the recommended dosages). I mean, it does help with the cough but I still feel completely normal.
I did have a nasty cough (actually tore some cartilage in my chest) a few years back and the doc prescribed me some codeine.
Glorious. I should probably never get morphine, ever, (and I’ve never had it) because Codeine made me feel so damn good (nicely faded, chilled, like being drunk without a hangover) I think I’d probably be prone to an addiction.
Don’t operate any heavy computers while you’re on that stuff.
Last time I took that stuff, we were skiing in the hind end of nowhere. I woke up in the middle of the night feeling nauseous, so I went to the bathroom. While waiting to barf, I passed out on the floor and cracked my head open. Hubby woke up and found me lying in a pool of blood and nearly had the big one right there. After the initial panic I showered off only to discover that the cut on my eyebrow was a massive half inch long. Man that was a lot of blood for such a weensy cut.
I had a black eye for the next few days and everyone was giving hubby the stink eye, thinking he
had knocked me about. Last time I’ll ever take Nyquil!
