I found two buttercups today!!

Initially, this may not be a big deal to you, but let me provide some background.

Growing up, my grandmother’s yard would get several buttercups during the summer. My mom and I would get a kick out of holding one under each other’s chins to “see if we liked butter” (if it reflected yellow, you liked butter. Silliness, yes, but a big deal to a 4 or 5 year old.) I don’t remember ever seeing them in our own yard as I child.

Cut to 3 years ago. My grandmother died after an illness, and my grandfather sold me his house. Earlier this year, my mother died. (my dad passed away in '96)

Yesterday, my neighbor and I were chatting, and she was complaining about all those little white flowers you get in your lawn if you haven’t mowed it in a week or so. The conversation switched over to buttercups, and I made a comment that I hadn’t seen one in my yard in years, and related the above story.

Today, I went to my mom’s and mowed the lawn to keep the place looking nice while we sell the house. I moved the For Sale sign so that I could mow around it. I didn’t notice anything unusual when I did that. However, when I went to make a pass with the lawnmower, there were two perfect buttercups right where the sign was. I laughed a little in between sudden tears, and mowed around the buttercups.

I’m not very religious, but sometimes, things like these make me doubt my doubts. It was a very peaceful feeling, and I couldn’t stop smiling for hours.

RIP, Lavergne and Helen, and thank you.

Happenstance or not, that is touching. I hope there are many more buttercups in your future.
