We had a guy at college (1977) who went door-to-door in the dorms soliciting nookie.
He was never threatening and he never asked the same person twice (must have had a system); he asked; he got slapped/doors slammed in face/boyfriends emerge from shadows threatening violence/and also some “takers”.
One girl complained to the dean and the dean said unless he’s using threatening language that he’s free to continue.
I have a gut feeling that nowadays, the PC thought police would squash this kind of activity under the loose grounds (IMHO) that the act of asking was in and of itself threatening.
I’ve never in my life opened a flirt thread. I rarely open MPSIMS at all, in fact. So you’d think I’d be safe from it.
It’s cute and funny when it happens once in awhile, when there’s some sort of particularly clever opportunity. But otherwise, yeah, it’s gotten fucking annoying. Especially with the posters who seem to do nothing else here.
I’ll admit to being a shameless flirt in real life, but it’s just really goddamn old when every other thread has that same moronic line from Friends in it. How many times is one joke funny to you guys? I hate to think what these folks’ real lives are like - how hard up for attention do you have to get in order to develop the weird and obnoxious compulsion to constantly flirt online? Is flirting anonymously - and thus minus any shred of real sexual tension - fun for you guys? I mean, I guess it’s “safe” in some respect that real life human interaction isn’t. But still, how embarrassing for you.
Anyway, none of the rest of us would care if it was confined to those moronic threads in MPSIMS. If a bunch of people there help their self-esteem by reading and writing “How you doin’?” over and over, fine. But does it have to be everywhere else as well?
Aww, nuts. You just have to spoil it by complimenting my insult and then apologising, don’t you? Can we declare peace - and that goes for all flirters/flirtees, too? I thought I’d shaken and made up with Kythereia in the thread in question, and I really don’t feel like carrying on an extended sniping campaign.
Shit. Can we pretend I didn’t just post that? I’m sorry, it was completely uncalled for. I’m just in a pissy mood because I’m sleep-deprived and it’s been a rather bad day. I’m going to take a nap now.
In real life, I am a flirt as well. As soon as I get the chance to feel comfortable enough with someone, it seems to happen naturally with me. I shut it down when asked to do so or when it’s clear that it makes people uncomfortable. I have a message board flirting style too, which is basically the written expression of my usual verbal and physical style. I’m not such an accomplished flirt as some, but I think I do all right. It isn’t as if any of the flirts mentioned here spend all their time doing that. I see intelligent and non-flirtatious commentary from them regularly.
So…(thinking hard)…anyone want to come over and play Battleship with me?
