I got a cool-looking mystery knife.

I was given a knife? Dagger? Stabby thing? by a friend who bought it at a flea market or somewhere when she saw it and thought of me. I know nothing about knives beyond “some of them look cool”. It is about a foot long, tip to tip. It is heavy. The sheath is stamped with a logo with the letters FW in an oval, around which are a hand holding a hammer, flames, and a hand holding a dagger. There is a small “M” stamped on the metal of the knife near the handle. It is clearly not an antique and probably some sort of mass-produced junk. That said:

Any guesses as to what sort of knife this may be attempting to be? The giver said she thought it may be some sort of throwing knife but it seems entirely unlike any throwing knife I’ve ever seen.

Looking at it, it seems very much throw-able. The main criteria there being a full tang handle. The photo makes it appear that it is a full tang as well as sharpened pommel. In some ways you double your chances of making this blade stick should you decide to throw it. It’s definitely a dagger since the common definition of that is a knife with a double edge. As to any markings on blade or sheath, I have no clue beyond manufacturer (initials on sheath) and maker (initial on blade.)

It does look a lot like these throwing daggers. Obviously not exactly the same. Those are $30 for three. Plus shipping.

The only knife maker I’ve found that uses “FW” in any way in their name is “Fishwolf Knives”. However, they don’t have a picture of any of their scabbards on their web site, so I’m not sure if that’s their logo or not. And that knife doesn’t match any of their stock.

If the pommel sharp or pointed? You couldn’t throw it with a sharpened pommel, or carry it without stabbing yourself for that matter. It reminds me of a fantasy or medieval knife that is made just to look cool.

It looks like a fantasy knife.

Yeah, that’s what I was thinking - it’s cool looking and ridiculously impractical for anything else. The pommel does indeed come to a point but isn’t sharpened in the least; the edges aren’t even tapered to a point really.

I’ll echo the “impractical fantasy knife” sentiment. It first struck me as a westernized version of a kunai, a not-really-for-throwing trowl/knife thing that’s gotten popular as a “ninja throwing knife” due primarily to the anime Naruto.

A lot of throwing weapons lack any protection for the hand, but this knife has a safe area behind the blade that wouldn’t cut your fingers if you stabbed something with it. I learned at a young age not to stab something hard with a throwing knife unless you want a tetanus booster. A foot’s pretty long for a throwing knife and the pommel is useless for anything but balance, so I’d say it’s probably meant to be just a normal dagger.

Looks like a throwing weapon, or could possibly be used as a dagger for close attacks in desperate measures. It reminds me of kunai, with the exception of the differences between the back end the shape and proportions seem very similar.

To me too.
