I got a new kind of chain letter, and it's literary!

Today I got a chain letter in the mail–which hardly ever happens now that we have the Internet–but this was one of those “club” ones, where you’re supposed to send an item to the second name, send 6 copies out, and wah-lah, you’ll get 36 items in the mail.

This was a book club, though. I’m supposed to send out one paperback book that I have enjoyed to this random person, and then send out 6 copies blah blah blah, and I’ll get 36 books for the price of one stamp!

Well. Besides the fact that I don’t like chain letters, I’m not really willing to send away a book. Most of the books I own are ones that I want to keep, and a lot of them could not easily be replaced. I’m tempted to send something really oddball, though. But assuming that I got any books (ha ha, right), they’d probably be rotten anyway.

But hey, if any of you Dopers want to be in on this great book club deal, just let me know!

Books I wouldn’t do, because I have a feeling you’d get some really crappy ones - romantic historical fiction, How to Cross-Country Ski*, etc. I did do one of these once, though, because it was for recipes. It was internet-based, not regular mail. It worked pretty well and I got about 15 decent recipes.

  • My husband actually bought this book at a used book stall for about $.50. We lived in South Carolina at the time.
