I got a train set

A Marklin z-scale (1/220) train set, to be exact. Nothing fancy, just a starter set with 1 locomotive and 2 cars. The whole thing fits neatly on my desk, as you can see. It’s very relaxing to watch the tiny train go around and around… and around…

Oh, and in case you’re wondering, the AAA battery on the flat car is not a power source. I just put it there for scale when I took the picture.

That’s pretty neat. I’ve always been into trains ever since I was a little kid, and I’ve always wanted to get a set or something (space doesn’t permit in this tiny apartment, but maybe someday). Anyway, it’s one of those things that I never really outgrew.

Very Cool, I have been working on a largish HO setup in my Basement since late September. The Main layout is an outer loop and a figure 8 connected by remote switches and a Station area, rail yard and a large Bypass Bridge for no apparent reason.

Under the main table is a 36" by 56" simple oval that is my sons trained. Mounted on a fake grass covered board.

Finally hanging from the rafters is a 4’x4’ circle layout with a full town crafted out of Styrofoam and craft paint that I built with my daughter.

(I go a little manic on these things).

That’s what I thought too, but my little oval track takes about 20x16" of space… You can even buy a complete layout in a briefcase, though they are rather expensive.

That is so cool. I’d love to have one of those sets of yours, scr4.

Model railways are wonderful. One of these days I’ll have a decent layout.

However, they are expensive, and they are limited (real trains don’t run around in tight ovals). For the rest of us there is something which is possibly even better - computer railway simulators! I’ve got Microsoft Train Simulator, which is the most popular (I’ve also got the nice Japanese one BVE - it’s FREE). No ovals with these things. You can drive trains with reasonably accurate physics along hundreds of miles of non-repetitive route of either fictional lines, or lines modeled on real-world routes. There are dozens of enthusiasts out there who model lines from all over the world.

Here’s a screenshot taken from the POV of the engineer of a “hood”-style locomotive leaning out the window of the cab on a line north of Sydney: http://img237.imageshack.us/my.php?image=48hiedootwindie3yz.jpg

Nice. Out of my league (like th’ wee choo-choo) but nice, TLD.
