I got an e-mail reply from Brooke McEldowney (9 Chickweed Lane artist)

This week in 9 Chickweed Lane, Mr. McEldowney has been tantalizing us by having a hunk working shirtless “offstage”. We can tell by the expressions of Julia and the vet that this guy, Sven, is quite an eyeful, but we don’t get to see him.

I e-mailed the artist to tell him “Enough’s enough! We want to see Sven!”, and he e-mailed me back, dryly saying that he’d “take my request under advisement.”

What do you think? Will Sven show himself, or remain forever off-camera?

Off-camera, of course–the joke’s better that way!

A number of months ago, my grandmother laughed at a One Big Happy cartoon in which Ruthie (the young girl who is the protagonist) tells an older woman that she has to go to the bathroom. The woman replies that it is more polite in public for a woman to say she has to powder her nose. Ruthie replies, “If you don’t watch out, I’m going to powder my nose in my pants!” I helped my grandmother write a letter to the cartoonist, Rick DeTorie, showing her appreciation for the cartoon. She recieved a very nice card on personalized stationary, as well as an original sketch of Ruthie. He said that other cartoonists had complemented him on the same cartoon, and jokingly fretted that it would be difficult to come up with a funnier one now.
