Series 1988 A. Still in good condition. Well, good enough to remain in circulation I guess.
Just kind of odd to get an old-school bill from an ATM these days. I guess I got used to the new, “big-head” bills, but looking at an old one makes the new ones look really goofy. I miss all the detail around the edges, and the south side of the White House looks much more distinguished to me. I wish they would at least change that part back.
During the 80’s in my former capacity as a cashier for a grocery store, I used to fairly frequently get $20’s (and IIRC at least one 50 or 100) from the 1930’s. They were in pretty good condition too, so I’m guessing some old coot (or his spawn) pulled some of them out of a stash he’d had under his floorboards for 50 years and spent them.
I got a 1938 series $5 bill from someone paying admission for one of our local monthly folk concerts. I bought it out of the till with a new $5 and kept it.
About 15 years ago, I went to the drive through of the bank and cash a check for $400 dollars. Cashier gave me two hundred dollar bills and 10 twenty dollar bills.
The 10 Twenties were 1938 bills w/ consecutive serial numbers. I kept them. Still have them in my safe deposit box.
I have no idea if they worth more than twenty dollars apiece. but I have them, just in case.
About 20 years ago a guy gave my dad $1500 for a motorcycle, and paid with 3 $500 bills. They were not in good shape so probably not worth very much over face value, but I sure wish my dad had kept at least one of them, just for the novelty, but he took them right to the bank and deposited them, and they presumably turned them over to the Fed and were destroyed. Too bad.
That reminds me of one of trips to Vegas. Twenty years ago this year.
We stayed at the Old Dunes Hotel. I was on a roll on the Craps table and one of the regulars came in and plucked down a 1,000 bill on the Don’t Pass. Dealers yell out “Money Plays!!”.
I made my point.
Plucks down another 1,000 bill. “Money Plays!!”
I made my point.
Plucks down another 1000 bill.
Lather … Rinse … Repeat
A total of 10 times, before I finally Crap out.
I made about Two grand on the roll. A buddy of mine makes about 15000 grand on that roll.
Dude with Thousand dollar bills loses 10 grand.
When we ask a bout the guy, he had some ‘old’ money and apparenty had a shot load of thousand dollar bills hanging around his house.:dubious:
Ever since the new bills I have no idea what US currency looks like. Somebody could slip me a glaring fake and I wouldn’t notice. Really. I’m used to the old ones.
I got an old style $20 from the ATM two or three years ago. I showed it to everyone at work like a big dork, and then put it in my desk drawer at home. It’s still there. I know it’s silly, but I like having it around.
