I ran out of milk 3 weeks ago and did not eat any of my shredded wheat during that time. I didn’t make the connection until today but my bowels had returned to normal during that period. A few days ago I bought milk and shredded wheat and have been eating a couple of bowls a day. My stomach is right back to pain and cramping. I am strongly suspecting the shredded wheat as the culprit.
Too much fiber isn’t good for you either. Maybe cut back to one bowl a day and see what happens?
Dammit.
Just figured out I need a liquid vdiet while recovering.
Why didn’t the NP tell me?
I’m usually good at hiding physical discomfort (hid an appendicitis from my wife for over a week), but I got busted by The Missus just yesterday walking slightly doubled over and making my unhappy face.
“Have you thought about going to the doctor?”
“No. I could go there with a bone-stick-out fracture and they’d tell me the same thing they always do: lose weight, move more, eat less fat and more fiber, and call us for antibiotics if you start running a fever.”
Even worse, someone might want me to go to a hospital out of an abundance of caution. Ain’t got the time or money to spend on hospitals and doctors for a bellyache that will clear up on its own. I hate the condition, but I know what triggers it. Raisin Bran or anything with oat flour in it. Oatmeal I can handle, Cheerios will knock me right down. But I loves me some Cheerios, so it’s a calculated risk (Calculation: Imma eat dis, and it’s gonna hurt for a week.)
You sure it isn’t the milk? Lactose intolerance has similar symptoms.
I agree with xizor HoneyBadgerDC, you may want to go for a second-opinion.
Diverticulitis typically involves abdominal pain, fever, and nausea and is more like an infection.
Did they take a cat scan and find the bulges or was your original diagnosis based on just the symptoms?
Even if you were diagnosed with diverticulitis this may be another problem if it is mostly pain and cramping. I think it would be worth your time to talk to a doctor as I would hate for you to have another problem and leave it untreated and suffer.
It may still be diverticulitis but I would have it checked.
I was diagnosed with it in May 2015 after my first, and very acute, episode. I had three acute episodes in the couple of months after that.
Since then when I feel something coming on (constipation) I basically stop eating solids and drink a lot of water and prune juice. After a day or two I might have a boiled egg, yogurt, jello, etc. I have gotten through all of them (except the first) without medical attention or antibiotics.
That worked each time except for this past Thanksgiving. I wasn’t paying attention to what my bod was telling me and I started the fluid regimen too late, so I had another acute episode. Unlike previous episodes, it took 3-4 weeks to get back to normal.
The scary thing is, do we permanently damage our colon with each acute episode? I asked my doctor and he said “Maybe, maybe not.” So on we go. It’s so much fun getting old. :dubious:

I have not been officially diagnosed with diverticulitis, my diagnosis was gastric, and duodenal ulcers. I just get so sick and stay sick for long periods of time. The pain gets so bad I can’t move sometimes but I seldom get much more than a slight fever so I don’t think infection is happening. I haven’t eaten the shredded wheat now for 3days I think and today I started feeling pretty good with no pain and cramping. Oat meal and frosted flakes don’t seem to bother me. For some reason my Dr. chooses to ignore my constipation and cramping issues he just says take more fiber.
Dude don’t eat the shredded wheat. It’s obviously bad for your gut. Some peeps just can’t eat certain things. I’d love to go eat every sweet they sell. But I’m t1 diabetic and I KNOW it’s bad and will raise my BS to dangerous levels and I will feel sick and have to take extra insulin. I could carry on like this for awhile but eventually I’d start losing body parts and kidney function or go blind. If it’s bad, don’t do it. Easy-peasy.
Even though your comments were not directed at me, I will give you my two cents anyway . . .
I was diagnosed with diverticulitis in a hospital emergency room after several days of severe pain, and then finally the passing of blood – which really scared me and motivated me to get help. Before they wheeled me in for the scan, the ER doc said I probably had either diverticulitis or ulcerative colitis.
They gave me antibiotics, but that is the only time I’ve had to take them. An incident I had a few months later was so bad that I could barely walk, but my body fought it and won. My doc said that’s fine – no need to take antibiotics if they’re not necessary.
Did your doc ever suggest Crohn’s or celiac disease? A firm diagnosis (if possible) is necessary in order to get proper treatment.
CAT confirmed.
BTW–fever & pain & cramping–confirmed.
Yet, I went to work today.
And was productive.
Ate a real meal for lunch.
Still on antibiotics.
Would Yogurt trigger trouble?
