<dammit… I posted something but it didn’t take…once more with feeling!>
I’m so sorry to hear the unfortunate news. Still Kytheria, don’t let the bastards wear you down!
Save the feeling sorry for yourself until a bit later. Right now you’ve got to climb back in the ring and slug it out. You’ll find something new and it will be better than the last place you worked.
BTW, I hear the Silver Rail on Yonge is always looking for fresh tallent. I’ll expect an invitation to your feature night.
Sorry to hear about your lousy luck. But my experience is that this is a door opening; not closing. I’ve been laid off from LOTS of jobs and almost without exception, the next job was better than the last. The friends will still be friends, and you’ll make new ones at the next place.
This is your chance to learn a new skill, make new friends, find out what you’re good at, find out what you’re bad at, make more money, hone your resume writing skills, buy new clothes, or follow a dream. Best of luck to you!
So sorry to hear this, Kythereia. And it’s worse when it’s a non-sucky job that fits you. {{{mega hugs }}}
Did they say why they let you go?
It could be worse. I got un-hired once from a job that a headhunter had found for me, and that I had moved to Mississauga for… the employer admitted that they had mis-specified the job requirements and gotten the wrong person (me). But within a month I had a better job at a company where a bunch of people from my class at electronics school were working…
Things do get better.
And you can post more in The Continuing Adventures Of The Straight Dope in between perusals of monster.ca and workopolis.com…
Sorry to hear of your layoff Kythereia. It sucks eggs to get let go from a job and not knowing what you are going to do. It happened to me last year, from a job I worked at for 5 years.
You will find a new job soon, and it will be better than this one. As Kalhoun said, it’s a door opening, not closing.
I found a job in the field I really wanted to work in (environmental remediation), instead of being in a job I no longer liked or enjoyed. In the long run being laid off was the best thing that ever happened to me and now I have a job I love to do.
But for now give yourself some time to be crabby and pissed off. Eat a pint of your favorite Ben & Jerry’s, and then say fu*k it and then start looking for a new job when you feel up to it.
Oh, no, hugs to my Canadian partner in SDMB…I’ve been there - you feel crappy for a couple of days…it’s ok to do that…do all the things you can’t do when you’re working, long walks, checking out all the hotties, then get another job PDQ…use everybody you know who may have contacts…you rock so there’s no reason you won’t find a job soon!
Aw, man…being laid off bites monkey butt, big time
But as others have said, it can be the best thing that has ever happened to you (although I’m sure it doesn’t feel like it at the moment). I’ve been where you are and I survived. You will too!
Don’t think of it as being umemployed. Think of it as being “involuntarily leisured” Take a few days to wallow and mourn, then a few more to go do some fun/nice things for yourself that you couldn’t do if you were working (go see a matinee, window shop, go for a drive, etc…anything at all that makes you feel good).
I’ll sure you’ll have an even better job even sooner than you think. Hugs and good wishes being sent your way
