I just got laid off

Got an instant message from my manager to meet. Went up and was let go. I’m in a cab now going home. At least it wasn’t just me, in the sense that I wasn’t fired over anything I did but because of positions being eliminated. I don’t know what’s going to happen yet.

Good luck Antinor! I know it’s a scary feeling.

I’m really sorry to hear that. Rough patches go away over time, I know that sounds trite.

First off, very sorry to hear that.

Not sure your industry, but I just switched jobs myself (voluntary not layoff so I know I cannot relate to the stress you’re feeling) in the IT field and there are a lot of good jobs out there that were not present even 12 months ago.

It is never a good time to be laid off, but hit those sites quick, keep your head and confidence up (it shows on interviews) and get that resume out there!

It happened to me about five years back. Best wishes.

Nobody does. Good luck.

Scary stuff.

File for unemployment ASAP.

So sorry that it happened - be good to yourself as you figure stuff out…

I will. I get 60 days of pay though.

Best wishes - may your time between jobs be as brief as you wish and rejuvenating rather than stressful.

Insurance. I will get to all that. Today is wine day though.

Condolences.

Enjoy wine day. Enjoy a few wine days in fact, but then get your resume polished up and start looking right away.

Best of luck.

Thank you. At least I’ll have something to talk to my therapist about next visit!

This is my wish for you, also. May you come out of this in a better position, with a better company.

Did you have any idea it was coming? Were you able to prepare mentally at all?

Wow, that is crazy. So sudden. You must just be in a daze right now. I hope everything works out for you.

Speedy road back to the next great job.

Enjoy the wine.

I had some idea that they might let a few go, but we’ve been told repeatedly that we are (well were for me) a ‘viable business line that will always be there’. Then I get an instant message to come meet with my manager and BOOM. As I was walking out, another person was coming out that the same thing happened to. From what I understand, 15 positions in my department are being eliminated.

I would like to go back, I’ve been there for almost 10 years and know the business really well. I have 20 years in the industry. I have a lot of friends and people that are already offering to help me find something, but who knows how that will go.

Sorry Antinor01, that sucks.

Try to stay positive. I’ve been laid off like 4 or 5 times in my career, and more often than not, I ended up with a better job.

I know a few people who have managed rejuvenating layoffs. I don’t know what your financial situation is - most of the ones were in an ok place in regards to expenses, severance, and savings - or your employment outlook is - again, its easier to be relaxed if you know you are in demand. I have more than one friend who has enjoyed time off and hasn’t even started to look until they feel they are ready - and then has managed to find something quickly.

Even if it isn’t the case that you are financially secure and in demand, try to remember to control what you can control and let go of what you can’t. Enjoy your wine - its a good start in the whole controlling what you can control and letting go of the rest. The holidays are coming up and its a good time to have some extra time on your hands. Make sure to stay in touch with friends - personal as well as professional - and don’t let this isolate you.

That sucks, friend Antinor. I’ll be thinking of you.
