Not a good day! At least you can stretch ‘wine day’ through the weekend without any feelings of guilt!
If you feel like you’re on good terms with your coworkers, consider taking them up on their offers to network or at least offer support once you are ready to jump back into the market.
It’s a rough feeling, but lots of us have survived it, so be hopeful, and take care of yourself - if you notice yourself getting down in the dumps, or overly critical or harsh with yourself, try to step back and do something that you know is relaxing and rejuvenating. Looking for work is the roughest job of all, in my opinion.
I work in the technology industry so I’ve been laid off several times over the years. Not fun, but at least it’s a bit less surprising: “Hey guys, the company is bankrupt! So, yeah, you’re all fired. Now excuse me while I find a bottle of pills to swallow…”
It would be nice to have a job that lasts for a couple of years…
Thanks. I will, but by then I’ll be eligible for individual under the ACA and if I’m not working yet it will be dirt cheap. I have coverage until the end of next June as it is.
I know exactly what you mean. I’m now at a crown corporation, but that too is shortly going to be sold to the private sector, along with my government pension.
At the trailing edge of baby boomers, it seems as soon as I’m eligible for any existing benefit program it gets changed or cancelled.
I was laid off in 1999 and 2009. My first layoff was great - I had a job lined up before my official last day, with a raise and a signing bonus. I used my severance package as a giant down payment for my current house. My second one wasn’t quite as good, but I did get a job quickly. We’ll see about the third one.
My advice - finding your next job is a full time job. Reach out to your network, and let them know you are available. Stay social.
Enjoy the wine for now, and good luck!
*I give it a 50/50 chance that I’ll add a third to the list…maybe as soon as next week.
I was laid off in 2008. I didn’t really start looking for anything for about a year. In the end I’ve got something that is better than where I was, which wasn’t a nice place to be anymore.
Sorry to hear! Do enjoy your wine, and your weekend, Monday will come round soon enough.
Do try your best to wake up with a smile on your face everyday you’re not a wage slave. Consider it a small victory, every day it happens!
Painful endings are just clever camouflage for the very best new beginnings, try and stay positive. It costs nothing and pays enormous benefits, no matter the length of your down time.
Sending you best wishes and good luck in abundance!
Thanks, I’m trying. It just doesn’t feel real yet, like something from a bad dream. I haven’t really yet accepted that I won’t be at my desk at 730 Monday morning. Ah well.
My condolences as well. And another reminder to start the unemployment process ASAP: doesn’t matter what you get paid on the way out the door, it may be a month before you get a first unemployment check and it’s not likely to be enough to cover expenses anway.
I was laid off in Feb. 2012, went to another state after a year of unemployment to find work, because the work situation here really is that bad. Got work with the state there; got an offer of my old job back right at the time my husband was saying he wanted to stay in the <original> area another couple years because his job was kinda looking good for once. So, I left the new job after three months, started my ‘old’ job up again last month, and already have another layoff notice for January. /facepalm
You HAVE to have better luck than that, ok ? Promise me And pass that wine over, lol
