I got mugged today, in eastern Estonia. I have a black eye and a chipped tooth. I wish I could say the other guy had it worse, but he doesn’t. Luckily they didn’t get my camera. Stupida bastards.
Yikes-that sounds awful.
Hope you recover soon.
Sorry to hear that. If this makes you feel better, tt happened to me more than once when I was kid though.
that sucks, did you at least get a good look a the scumbag(s) so you could take it up with law enforcement?
hope you get better fast…
so far, i’ve been lucky, never been mugged, but whenever i’m out on the street i generally have a “pissed off” look about me, sort of a psychotic look in my eyes, any attempted muggers that may have been thinking about trying something stupid thought otherwise when i made eye contact with a “i could just assume snap your neck as look at you” expression, heck, panhandlers in Boston give me a wide berth, they start approaching me to ask for money, then rapidly change direction
i have no explination for this, i don’t look scary or evil, i just emit a “leave me the frak alone” aura or something…
…and that’s not even taking into account the fact that i have a rather evil looking lockback knife (folded) clipped inside my pants pocket, you really can’t see it, doesn’t look like i’m carrying any kind of cutting tool, but if push came to shove and things went bad, a short, but evil looking partially serrated 4" blade is better than nothing, things’d have to go really bad before i deployed it, though…
hope you get better quick, and hope the muggers get what’s coming to them… like getting flattened by a bus or something…
Damn, Stentor, that sucks, but I’m glad it wasn’t any worse.
And now, the part where I take my life in my hands.
I think you man “just as soon”, as in “he’d just as soon kill you as look at you”.
I must be the opposite. I can be a tourist in some city a thousand miles from home and people will ask me for directions.
Unfortunately I wasn’t able to get a good ID. He was a clean shaven Russian, about my height, hair about 2 cm long. Or to put it another way, he looked like half the people you run inot in the street. The thing that really surprised me was how casually he went about things. There wasn’t a lot of anger or excitement. He approached, told me he wanted to take a photo of me with my camera. I said no and tried to walk away. He grabbed the camera strap and wouldn’t let go. He didn’t yell or make any noise, just very casually punched me in the face. This was a business proposition to him, nothing more. He let go, probably, I think, based on the combination of me starting to hold up my tripod in a threatening manner, and the possibility of cars approaching. My guess is the professionals end their robberies after two minutes or so, whether they have what they want or not. At any rate, my great regret right now is that I didn’t just shove the tripod in his face like a spear (much more effective than swinging a stick like a baseball bat if you’re ever in the same situation).
Anyway, yesterday I went to the dentist and got my chipped tooth repaired. Luckily she did a good job and only charged me 1000 EEK, less than $100. I think the headaches have cleared up, so besides the black eye I’m okay now. Thank you all for your concern.
That really sucks, Stentor. It sounds like the guy didn’t get anything. If that’s the case, you are pretty lucky. I witnessed a mugging like yours, and I know how weird it is that someone gets that violent with such impassivity.
