Actually, a guide dog puppy in training, my first ever. They brought him to us last night. He’s so cute!!
His name is Opie, and his brothers Oliver and Oakley live in the same town as us, so he’ll see them a lot. pic.
We had a photo shoot after having him for about 10 minutes.
I’ll be gone all this week (roomate and co-raiser is taking him for a bit), so I won’t see your responses until next week, just wanted to share and show pics.
It will be very hard to give him up. Hard to beat lab pups.
I hope he gets through, but even he doesn’t measure up he’ll be someone’s fine pet. My (late) father-in-law bugged the guide dog people daily until they let him have a flunky. He was a beautiful, well-trained pup that just happenned to be a bit dim.
I wonder if I saw him when I was in San Rafael for graduation. There were a lot of black labs.
Do you have a club there for meetings?
The Lab puppies we raised were dumb. Our last one, a Golden, was darn smart though. I think maybe she’s too smart to be a good guide, so I’m glad she got made a breeder. We puppy sat one of her puppies, and he was even smarter.
Number one question you’ll be asked: Isn’t it hard to give him up? You should start thinking up your answer right away.
Have fun with him, and start working on “do your business”.
Too cute for words! Looks just like my Brewster. He’s not training for anything, just my Anger Management Officer and little buddy. They are so intelligent and eager to please! I know you’re not doing the guide dog training. Just the house-breaking, basic obedience, and getting him out in public. But that’s necessary and very important. He’ll pick up on it quickly and be a most-loved member of your family before you know it.
Yeah, so far there’s nothing more embarrassing than standing outside my apartment, waiting for my dog to pee or poop and saying “Do your business!” and trying to sound excited about it, while people walk down the alley and stare at me. He should be with us for about a year. IK don’t know yet how hard he will be to give up. I’m in college, and I still have my dog at home, so hopefully by then i’ll have my dog (at home) and Opie, the dog who lives with me.
