So I moved from Los Angeles almost 6 years ago to move to the Great White North to move in with the future Mrs. Memory. There was very little about L.A. I was gonna miss. I was, however, gonna miss hearing Howard Stern. I’ve gone without for these past few years, because there was just no way to hear him. I
just got me a Sirius radio, dialed it in and in less than an hour, now I will have my Howard back. Mundane, sure. Silly, no doubt. But for me having Stern on in the morning again will be kinda like Going home . I’m a very happy man. The local radio talent has much to be desired. There are those of you whom probly feel the same about Howard, but, I for one, am So looking forward to having my old comfortable radio morning team back again.
welcome to the wonderful world of Sirius! You’ll quickly despise FM radio in any form. Even without Howard, Sirius is the best $12.95 a month i’ve ever spent.
I love love love my Sirius. I will admit it spends most of its time tuned into 21, 22, and 8, but I like 100 in the mornings as well. AND, I can get TWO CBC stations on it! Yay!
Channel 12. It supposedly randomly shuffles songs on its other channels, but I don’t think it’s too random - you never get anything Spanish but Macerena, for example. But, and this was AWESOME, I had Conway Twitty back to back with AD/DC this morning. That tickles me.
I love Sirius too - so much that when I bought my new car, the very next day I took it to get a new receiver installed. I was going into withdrawal after only 24 hours.
Dear friends…
I got my first Sirius receiver just around the first days of Howard, but much to my chagrin, the receivers in Canadia do not get Howard 100  I had to return that receiver, but for a week or so, I introduced myself to the sirius world. Now, I wouldn’t have bought into the whole Satillite radio world, if it hadn’t been for Howard. I hafta say, though, it’s a wonderful thing. Being from L.A., for years (decades) I had old time radio shows on KNX at 9 pm. I now have a 24hr a day old -radio-shows- station. I also just love shuffle and channel 16 (the vault) which is a great source of old school album side Rock. Stuff I haven’t heard in years (if ever) by artists I dig. well, well worth the few cents a day. I’m in an area that has only 6 stations…all of them…(suck) I like living in the “Boonies” but I love being here now that I have some music to get me through my day and My Howard. I really don’t know how long it might take me to get thru ALL the channels. check it out dear friends. I’m REALLY not an employee or a shill for Sirius.
The coolest thing about Sirius is when I find myself listening to the Showtunes station (77- with the world’s most annoying host, Seth Rudetsky) and thinking “Oh jiminy, are they playing from Wicked again?”- before Sirius I’d have been astonished beyond endurance to hear Broadway coming from my speakers when I didn’t have a CD in.
My favorite channels are Standards (Rosemary Clooney, Dean Martin, etc.- 75), Comedy (I actually prefer the “clean” comedy to the “raw”- for every Richard Pryor or George Carlin on the latter there are 10 people who seem to think crudity is in and of itself funny), Gay (106- Frank de Caro & Derek/Romaine- Michelangelo Signorile makes me understand just a little better why so many people dislike gays) and the various news stations (CNN and Bloomberg especially). It is totally worth the money.
I left my XACT received at work yesterday and tried to listen to Diamond Dave in FreeFM this morning… I would surely give up the privilege of hearing rather than listen to another second of his senseless drivel.
In only a few weeks, I have become a Satellite snob!
You know what it’s great for? Road trips! I had to go to my mom’s a few weeks ago - she’s 4 hours away - and it really made the trip much more pleasant. AND, I happened upon an unadvertised Howard dress rehearsal on the way over.
Have I mentioned that I’ve been a listener since WN BC?
Yes, I CAN get the American version of sirius here. I too, thought that all I had to have is an American address, but turns out you also need a receiver from the states. The model I bought in Canadia got all BUT Howard’s stations . I then had to wait til a relative recently went South of the border to get me a replacememt. All is well now.
Not exactly the answer to your question, but mine is, as I mentioned, plug and play. It is not permanently installed, which is how I wanted it. It’s the “Sportster” model and it plays through my FM radio in my car, in the office and at home. I have a car dock and a home dock. Total cost with the extra dock, after rebate, was $150 (there’s a monthly charge for the service as well - $12.95+tax) It is still not really satisfactorily set up in the car, but it’ll do. I could have had Tweeter set it up for an extra price and it would have been a little better, I’m sure. So, yes, you can have both a car radio and satellite radio at the same time.
That being said, you can go to the Sirius website www.sirius.com and see a list of other models, including ones that are permanently installed in the car. According to Howard, a lot of the models are difficult to get right now.
