I personally know a guy who was hired as a hit man and killed his target and was caught. He’s now serving a life sentence. Up until that point he worked as a phone operator at the local community college. There is absolutely no doubt that this happens in the real world.

If I was threatened like this, I couldn’t imagine doing anything other than calling the police, unless I was damn sure that it was some kind of idiotic prank.

Only a total moron would warn the intended victim so the guy is just using the threat to scare you. Which he has successfully done. And if you live in any metropolitan area no money need change hands. The right words to the right gangbanger will get the job done for free.
Doesn’t matter if the threat is likely to be followed up on or not. The threat has been made. Threatening another person is a crime whether or not the person completes the assault.

Yes, there are are people in the world who kill for money. When people say “hitmen are a myth”, they’re talking about “Gross Pointe Blank” style hitmen, who are wealthy freelancers who sit around in hotel rooms waiting for a call, then they fly out to anywhere in the world and silently dispatch the victim, in return for a suitcase full of unmarked hundred dollar bills. That sort of hitman is a myth.
There are real hitmen. Intelligence agencies have guys who kill people. But that’s not their usual job. There are no James Bond style spies with licenses to kill. But people disappear off the streets of various cities around the world, and are never seen again. Or somebody gets polonium in their tea. But these guys don’t work for strangers, they work for Dick Cheney or Vladimir Putin.
Then there are the organized crime hitmen. Again, these are not guys whose only job is to sit around waiting for the order to kill someone. Instead they are mafia guys who engage in normal organized crime, but they’re willing to kill people when their boss tells them to, maybe as part of their regular financial compensation and whacking people is just part of the job, or maybe they get a bonus. Again, these guys don’t work for strangers, they work for their boss. If you want a mob guy to kill someone you have to be connected. And the usual victim of gang hits is other gangsters.
Then there are just average guys who would kill someone if you offered to pay them. These are the junkies and friends of a friend mentioned above. The problem is reliability with these people. How do you find the sociopath who will kill someone for $2000, and how do you trust them? You’re dealing with a sociopath, by definition. If he’s willing to kill your enemy for $2000, why isn’t he willing to take your $2000 and walk away? How do you know he’s not a cop? This is why junkies and known degenerates are recruited for this sort of work.
Anyway, if you really do get threatened by someone that they’re going to hire a hitman to kill you, call the cops. It’s a crime to threaten to kill someone. It’s especially stupid to threaten to kill someone via email.
