I drove over an unusually high speed bump in a parking lot last night. I slowed down to gently roll over it, but after the front wheels of my 2001 Corolla ran over it, there was a loud thud coming from the underbelly of the car. I assumed that the bump just hit the underside. There is no change in the driveability of the car (no handling, acceleration, brake problems, etc). But the thud was pretty loud and I’m looking for opinions as to whether I should have it inspected. Is there anything crucial along the underside of the car that could have been damaged by a tall speed bump?
How about crawl underneath, look and see which parts are scratched up? I could be a number of things, oil pan, exhaust, frame, the bottom of your doors, etc.
The frame is supposed to protect the car. Have a look.
I notice bumps have a space on the side for bikes, so I just ride half on the bump & half on the no bump part. But then I have a truck so vrrrrroooom.
Go visit a place that offers free brake inspections. While they’ve got your car on the rack, ask them to check for damage to your exhaust train, gas tank plus any exposed hydraulic or fuel lines that could have been crushed.
