My iPhone 4 has served me very well. When I got it I know I bought the most basic model (8Gb) as there was a steep up-charge for the next level. Never had a low memory issue and after a few years decided it was good that I didn’t go or the more costly models.
Well fast forward to now. Time to upgrade and I turned to the used market to pick up a iPhone 5s which has 16GB’s - well I thought that I had 8 and that is still fine, 16 should last me. On my backup to move everything to the new one I see that it is listed 16GB’s, which only has 1GB free. I checked the box and yes I did get the 16 GB model though paid for the 8.
So this upgrade actually prevented the low memory condition, which was great. But now I wonder how this is going to affect the new phone. If I did know this earlier I most likely would be looking for a 32GB model. But we will see how it goes, I do have options to cut down the used storage I have & my pictures are a duplicated mess giving lost of ways of cutting it down in size. Will also look to some online storage.
Good to hear that you’ve managed to get 8GB free storage on your old iPhone
Yeah, I agree, if I had known that I would have got the 32GB one. The problem with iPhones is that they do not have SD card slots, so you can’t upgrade the on board storage.
My Galaxy S4 does have an SD card slot, so I only needed to buy the 16GB variant; knowing that I could pick up a 16GB microSD card for not a lot of money (via Amazon) and hence increase my storage capabilities.
In a unexpected twist my upgraded iPhone is defective and going back for a refund. This gives me the option of getting a 32 GB model instead which seems more practical for the amount of time I tend to hold on to these things.
When you bought your original, the 16GB model probably was the base model.
Apple’s been doing a weird thing where they launch with the 16GB as the base model, then launch an 8GB model later as an entry level phone when the next-gen models come out.
I think you are mistaken. I can’t remember Apple ever adding a lower-capacity phone after the initial offering. Unless, are you in a non-US market? They may have done something different overseas.
I stand corrected. Apple did in fact introduce both a bunch of models with lower storage later, sometimes while discontinuing the higher storage models. Looks like they did this with the 3GS, 4, 4S, and 5C.
