My interpretation was that the photographer/journalist was supposed to go interview someone appropriate about ovarian cancer, but through some sort of mixup, ended up with a lumberjack, and had to go with, screw it, let’s see what he knows about it. The humor lies in the fact that it’s nearly impossible what sort of mixup would result in someone accidentally ending up with a lumberjack instead of a medical professional or whatnot.

Now that it’s been fully explained, I expect you all to find it hilarious.

That’s how it was explained to me.

Apologies for saying “article” in OP…it’s obviously just a cover. (One thing about The Onion…once you know how it works, you rarely have to read more than the headline, and when they went to this style of joke, I think they were capitalizing on that.)

I think it’s simpler than that: the photographer was meant to send in something to illustrate ovarian cancer, but sent in entirely the wrong picture. And therefore is in big trouble.

This was my interpretation also.
