Just because this guy makes her work environment hostile does not give her the right to make his hostile. It’s still against the law, and it could get her fired. I’m sure you already know, AFG, that this isn’t the way to respond to this situation. You need to do everything above-board. And hopefully he’ll get what’s coming to him by him acting like an asshole, not you.
AFG, please disregard this advice until you CHECK. Wisernow may be right about the law in certain US jurisdictions, but you need to know what the law is where YOU ARE.
Also, as a former Hr person, I think you should also bear in mind that your COMPANY may have rules against surreptitious taping. If I recall aright, you work for a university; check the human resources web site. If there are such regulations, your boss may well use them against you.
wisernow has already confirmed that the law is, indeed, Canadian.
I personally say go for it. And I’ll see what I can dig up on the Canuck version of the ACLU. You rock, Amazon Floozy Goddess, don’t let the asshole get you down. hugs
I read that after I posted. I still say to check discreetly as to any regulations forbidding recording at work. If such exist, her boss could use her actions against her.
What ever happened to quiting a job you don’t like? Find another job, get a transfer, just get away from the creep. If enough people do it, perhaps HR will notice. (I doubt it.)
Oh, I like the job for the most part. It’s him that’s the main problem. The other people I work with are great.
I’ve been looking for other jobs for the last 3 years, but I cannot for the life of me find one that pays what I’m making now. And I’m already having some trouble financially, so I can’t afford to take a job that makes less. And I’m not picky either; If I could even find something as a secretary or car washer that paid the same, I’d take it. Job prospects just aren’t good here right now. A friend was telling me a couple days ago that her son couldn’t even get a part-time position at McDonald’s.
Digital voice recorders are cheap and can run for hours (8+) on a single charge or battery. Buy one, get some good dirt, then see if you can use it. Otherwise delete it. You can always claim you accidentally left it on.
OR, you could get one of those baby monitor things…The ones where the unit in the baby’s room is a transmitter, the other unit is the receiver/speaker. Put the speaker in your friends office/cubicle so they can listen in. It is not recording, just broadcasting. If your friend hears something, then you two can back it up together…
Also, being a University employee myself, I can say that they freak when lawyers get involved. If you can verify bad stuff, have a lawyer call them. It will stop post-haste.

Oh sure, if you want to be all mature about it…
…you need a new user name…

He called you a LITTLE SQUAW??? Best candidate for slap therapy I’ve seen today. Bastard!
Call in sick and enjoy your day. And if he takes you to HR then YOU can vehemently deny his allegations. That guy’s a tool!
Well, luckily I was able to switch with one of the part time people (see post #18). He got his panties all in a knot about it even though it won’t inconvenience him at all. I’m sure it was just because he was disappointed that he couldn’t trump me this time. To add to the small bit of revenge, on Thursday he came down with a horrible cold. It was nice to see him miserable.
BTW, I had a good day. Busy, but good.
I just wanted to bring this to the forefront. Is your financial situation worth being scared at work? Your gut is giving you an extremely important message.
I quit a job due to harassment from a co-worker January 2004, and I did get EI because I had documented how this woman had treated me. Your HR department needs to act on this NOW, or you need to quit. Seriously. We really don’t want to hear about you on the news.
(By the way, Calgary is crying for skilled workers. Ever think about going west, young woman? )
