Why has the administrator, or whoever, turned off the list of members?
Because it’s up to over 18,000.
okay…why would that matter?
Because the printout takes up a lot of room in the hamster’s bedroom, the one who runs in the little wheel that powers the server, and every time someone wants to look up a member, the hamster has to get out of the wheel and spend an inordinate amount of time rummaging through printouts to find what you’re looking for, and of course, while he’s moving stacks of paper he’s not running in the little wheel, so the server crashes.
Hope this helps.
I think it was actually over concerns about spammers, but I like DDG’s explanation better.
Spammers, limited server resources, and because it’s really unnecessary. We have most of the vB options disabled. We’re going for a minumum of discretionary features and a maximum of intelligent content. I’ll leave it up to each individual to decide how successful we are.
First off, I just want to say that I have no problem with there not being a members list. It’s non-existance has NEVER caused me any grief, and besides, who wants to have to bury all the dead/over-worked hamsters?
My question is, “Why is the icon still there?” Is it really complicated to get rid of it, or is it more of a nobody-has-ever-gotten-around-to-it type thing? Just curious.
I am not a tech. I think it’s mostly nobody-has-ever-gotten-around-to-it. Jerry the Tech God is kept very busy on the regular Chicago Reader website, and this message board is very low on the priority list.
A while back I offered to give my “Rules” icon for vBulletin 1.x to the SDMB, which they could use in place of the “Members” one. And posted how to change the template to point to the SDMB Rules whenever it was clicked on. That offer still stands, if that ever moves up the priority list in the future.
