If you have it open in Microsoft Word, try using the “Save As” comman from the “File” menu, then change the format of the document in the “Save as type” item in the window before saving it.
Open the file in Word. Choose file-save as . . . and choose “Word Document” as the document type.
If you have Word then you should be able just to load the file and do ‘File -> Save As …’ and there’ll be a ‘Save as type’ drop down set that to ‘Microsoft Word Format’.
If you don’t have Word then you can try looking for ‘rtf to doc’ converters but you’re better off e-mailing it to someone who has Word.

I did that but each time I try to upload it to the site, it says it needs to be in .txt or .doc.
What is the file extension of the document that you are trying to upload? .doc or .rtf?
For some reason it always save as .rtf and not .doc.
FRIG!
Are you sure the .doc version isn’t being saved somewhere else ?
Just trying renaming the file (right click in any file selector dialog, select rename, ‘OK’ the box warning you of dire conseqences).
I renamed it and again it is a .rtf. I know there has to be an easy answer…right?
What happened to the .doc file? If you renamed it to .doc, and then did SAVE AS, then you should have both a .doc and a .rtf in the folder. Do you? When you did the SAVE AS, did you just change the filename, or did you go through the drop down list of file types and choose “Word Document (*.doc)”…or something like that?
But anyways, you can download an app called Abiword. This should also let you do the same thing. Open the RTF file, and save out as a Word Document.
Got it.
THANKS A BUNCH!
You guys are great!
OK, I have another suggestion, just in case this document is doing something strange for an obscure MS Word reason:
(1) Open your .rtf document in MS Word
(2) Select all the document with Ctrl-A
(3) Copy all the document with Ctrl-C
(4) Open a new blank document with Ctrl-N
(5) Paste the original document with Ctrl-V
(6) Start saving the new copy with Ctrl-S. The “Save” windowwill open up, and you’ll need to change the name of the file, and probably change the directory that it goes into, before clicking on the “Save” button.
But if you do that, you’ll have a new file, with the .doc type, and with all the contents of the old .rtf file.
