I have a stupid question about Ferengi

What is the significance of the head gear? It’s not quite a hat, more like a little cape for the back of the head.

On DS9, Rom has one, and I think even Nog wears one. How come Quark doesn’t?

Style. They don’t want to hide their ears with hats.

“Headskirts.”

They discuss them at one point on DS9, I believe. They’re considered a bit formal, and are just a fashion accessory, like a tie. Quark apparently doesn’t much care for them, but lots of other Ferengi do.

Not everyone keeps their genitals in the same place, Captain.

Nothing to do with this OP, just a fun quote for other options.

I thought it was because the make up people didn’t want to make full head pieces for all the actors.

IIRC:

It was originally intended to be a military accessory - which is why Quark doesn’t have one, but at some point in the designing of the DS9 Ferengi makeup/costumes, they decided that Ferengi didn’t look right without them, so they gave them to the rest - never bothered changing Quark’s look, though.

In the Ferengi’s first appearance, the makeup department had to cover up some holes in the headpieces. Afterwards, they were worked into Ferengi culture and fashion “on-screen.”

Wow. You learn something new every day.
I’m glad today’s lesson didn’t involve bruising in any way.

Does the Ferengi even have a military? I thought it was established in TNG that they were more of “Yankee traders.” (Yeah, I know, try not to say “Bergman” and “Continuity” in the same breath.)

Not much profit in the armed services, is there?

The Ferengi Alliance seems to have some control over military starships run by individual Damons.

Recall the TNG ep The Battle (among others) and the ENT ep Acquisition which give hints and insights as to Ferengi government and military. The Last Outpost will not be mentioned here.

Not a HUGE trek geek, but it always seemed to me that the Ferengi "miltary" was more along the line of privateers. A "dayman" (I have no idea how that is spelled) was simply someone who had amassed enough money and influence to have a ship as his profit makeing venture.

I seem to remember one episode where a Ferengi captain was only able to maintain his crew's support until they found out he was not in it for the profit. Once profit wasn't a factor, the crew tossed his ass out.

Mm-hm. That was the one where the Daimon in question was trying to kill Picard because Picard had killed his son (when said son tried to attack the U.S.S. Stargazer, which Picard had commanded at the time).

Riker convinced the Ferengi first officer that the venture lacked profit potential. The Ferengi first officer was already appalled at the Daimon for giving away a whole starship, earlier, and when he learned that it was all for revenge, he apparently removed the Daimon from command, as per Ferengi rules of some sort.

Precisely how they run any kind of organized military in this manner escapes me.

My father-in-law informs me that “ferengi” is, in fact, an Arabic word meaning “foreigner.” I have no idea if this is true, though… although he also remarks that “Jem-hadar” is also Arabic, and denotes a military rank, which I seem to remember as true (because I do remember “subhadar” being a military rank…)

Good grief! Look above y’all’s posts!

Ferengi Alliance

Yes, the control seems vague and inadequately explained, but it is there.

Yes, that’s the way I saw it like Frontiers or Elite perhaps
