I used to be in the biz. This is no where near unethical. Your manager has a quota to hit, and in his portfolio of business he thinks it makes sense for you to miss your number for your managers greater good.
It *is *treating you like a doormat and, I truly mean this is a decent way, you certainly are *not *a top performer if you can not handle this professionally.
As several people have called out up thread – get a face to face with your manager right away. Ask him clearly what the quid pro quo is. Shit, ask him for your promotion NOW so you can focus 110% on being a team player. Your manager has to know that you’re screwing the lottery if you miss Jan.*
I am assuming your manager is a pro. I also assume he is male.
Yeah, not seeing an ethical issue here either. You’re simply being asked to do things not entirely in your job description, which happens to most people who don’t have unions. (In my case, I don’t get quarterly bonuses ever, I just get further behind in my regular work.) I’d go ahead and ask for some quid pro quo consideration after laying out the “if I help you with X then I’m not going to get Y” situation.
Isn’t this the primary function of management? To find ways to avoid giving out raises and bonuses? Isn’t that what a manager gets bonuses for accomplishing (although they use the euphemism “holding down costs”)?
I’m pretty surprised that nobody has mentioned looking into making a lateral move to another bank.
My parents followed an adviser they liked on two different moves. If your clients feel that you’re as important as you think you are, they will follow you. My mom just followed her hair dresser. If people find you valuable and you let all of them know where you are going (and why) they’ll follow you.
At least have your manager provide rubber gloves for when you have to work with the customers with less than 250K to invest. Wouldn’t want to catch anything when working with that rabble.
Why is it that this thread has been in existence for two days and newcrasher has not once addressed any of the multiple good suggestions on how to handle the situation, instead focusing solely on people’s arguments of what is or is not the definition of “ethical”?
ZOMG THIS THREAD IS EXISTING IMPROPERLY AND THE OP IS NOT ADDRESSING THE PROPER ASPECTS IN ZEE PROPER WAY!!1!1!!
Because newcrasher has a job, a family, and doesn’t live on a message board constantly.
It’s comments like this that make me realize why I don’t truck much with message boards anymore. I realize it was completely tame and as far as message board content goes, about a 2 on a 1-10 scale for argumentativeness. But really I just wanted to vent about an unfair situation at work.
Thanks for the good insights everyone. Maybe it isn’t unethical, but io sure feel taken advantage of and wanted to talk about it.
Fuck it, for sport I’m gonna address a few of the comments.
Oh so you assume it’s the fact that I don’t want to associate with people who don’t fit my book of business? Great assumption, but wrong. At work I get paid to help high net worth people, but IRL I can’t Think f me friend I have who would qualify to be my client. Hell I wouldn’t qualify to be my client. But you area douche to insinuate this has anything to do with how I view the people themselves.
Oh f@ck you you pompous twit. Great job at not understanding a situation and painting all of the people in the entire industry with a broad brush.
Over the years with my bank I have done a good job, gotten promoted and kept my nose clean. Do you know what I HAVE gotten in trouble for?
giving back overdraft fees to people when the bank stacked their credits/debits in a way that caused excessive overdrafts
NOT doing crappy loans that would have made me a ton of money. Yep, in all my years I never did a sub prime mortgage or sold some of the mortgage products that has gotten so many people in trouble.
ordering free checks for older people who will never use online banking, but are on tight budgets and can’t afford checks.
just last mont I was reprimanded for hanging out with the “occupy” folks on my lunch break and buying them pizza.
So, I don’t give a fuck that you don’t give a fuck, but to insinuate that because I am a banker my problems are not worthy of consideration because certainly it must be immoral displays your prejudice. And you are a fucktard.
The main point seems to be - are you getting paid your regular salary and just not getting your bonus? If so, I don’t see how anything is unethical. It’s unfortunate for you, and your boss may be mismanaging his department, but that’s what bosses do from time to time. I’ve lost bonuses due to things happening completely out of my control - but that’s why they’re bonuses and not salary.
I’m not sure how one gets a thread to exist improperly. But good on you for trying.
I never chastised you for not addressing each and every post in this thread (though if I want to be snarky, we’re only up to post 32with 7 of the posts being from you so it wouldn’t have been terribly difficult to do so). My point was that the only posts you have responded to have not been to acknowledge the really good suggestions on how to handle the situation. Only to bitch and then bitch some more.
Of course you’re being taken advantage of in this situation. So you can whine about semantical arguments or you can stand up for yourself by ADDRESSING THE PROPER ASPECTS IN ZEE PROPER WAY!!1!1!!
newcrasher and Cryptic C62, these comments by the two of you are insulting and/or jerkish and prohibited in this forum. There’s other borderline snarks here but I’m not going to go through slapping hands individually.
I think you’ve settled down a bit, newcrasher, but this goes for everyone: you are free to disagree with the OP and offer your analysis, NOT to call names and act like a jerk. This is not a warning, just a “tone it down” note.
It certainly does sound like a shitty situation, **newcrasher. ** But, are you going to at least try to talk to the manager? It’s one thing to try and work something out with boss and get shot down, but it’s another to not even try.
I get that your targets won’t be adjusted, I guess I’m just curious to know if you’ve even considered talking to him.
Talk to him, if he doesn’t back down, go higher. I’m suspecting that the reason you aren’t talking to him is because you know he is a major douchebag and won’t back down. If that’s the case, go to his boss. I don’t see how any reasonable person would see this as right.
For those interested, several people in my position reported the same problems in many regions. Some big wig mucking muck high up sent out an email to the managers who manage my position that it is unethical to ask us to focus on things that do not move us toward the goals associated to out position. Effective immediately we are doing our proper job.
He is scrambling. Hard. People are resigning left and right. It really is a bad situation. But he has made it so that people don’t want to rally to help him, but would rather turn in poor numbers to spite him.
