I have been a member here for 15 years...

I have (I see) just passed the 18,000 post mark. Now, while I would certainly never claim that all of those posts have been intellectual gold, I do think I can go on record that they were all honest attempts to contribute to the board.

That said, could I PLEEEEASE now be trusted to post more often than every 30 seconds??! I promise and swear on the Straight Dope book that the last 15 years have not been just a long con, designed to finally get myself into a trusted position where I can flood the place with spam. Really! Honestly!

Seriously. There’s really no need to keep that damn filter in place for people who have been here for more than a decade. Or even five years. Maybe even one. It’s annoying as hell.

You newcomers.

I’d bet there’s no way to change it for any class of users - at least, not using any board feature that’s enabled, such as user-class settings.

And I’d still take a zombie thread flag over that.

If I remember correctly, there is a way to change the waiting time in between posts, but it would change it for everyone, globally. There’s no way to set it just for specific members.

Other than controlling spambots, what floodgates would be opened by setting it to, say, 15 seconds?

I think the controlling spambots part is good enough. :stuck_out_tongue:

Only fifteen years?

Said the man who joined ten months earlier.

Newbies. Hmmmph!

Note we had a rather obnoxious one that we squashed a few days ago.

Heh, heh. You said “Member.”

Heck, I’m another 99er and it takes me *more *than 30 seconds to even come up with a “How You doin’” or a “Pics or it did not happen” or a “(golf clap)” or an “It’s [Bush/Obama]'s fault”. Who’s in such a hurry to say so many different things so briefly?

Then that may be just the advancing age and progressive neural degeneracy (I’ve been a degenerate in other senses of the word far longer)…

I’m with AB, I’d rather take a “Hey the last post was from 2002, are you sure you wanna raise a zombie?” flag.

I’m plenty OK with the 30; but then again I’m at best a 5 finger typist. Throwing ideas fast enough to break that isn’t in my future.

I’m a noob. I bow before your assembled awesomeness.

I’d just like the flag not to get thrown before I’ve actually, well, done anything. Can’t search because it says I’ve already searched. Can’t pull down today’s threads because I’ve already done that.

Can’t post because I’ve already posted. Maybe there’s some sort double secret probation for noobs. You guys wait 120 seconds. I wait 120 seconds to wait 120 seconds.

Hrmm. I thought it was 60 seconds in between posts?
ETA: yeh, just tested it. It’s 60 seconds.

The 60 second limit almost never comes up for me, and when it does… well, it’s less than a minute. I open up some other thread and come back to it, and it’s always ready now.

Huh, I could’ve sworn two or three of them were just idle chatter.

It’d be nice to have a board upgrade so that when you do a search and it fails for some reason or other, you could immediately re-try a search without getting the message that you have to wait for X seconds. Of course, Google works a lot better than the built-in board search function so it doesn’t really matter.

*if you post that you are a member, does it violate the “don’t be a dick” rule?

Depends on whether you’re an old fella.

Ok. I’m conflating. And they all feel like eternity. :grinning:

I really enjoyed my 5th anniversary. I got a personally autographed picture of Cecil, on horseback, on his ranch. For those of you who haven’t seen him, Cecil looks a lot like Don Imus.

Pfft. Noob. When I had my 10th, I got invited to the ranch, and my portrait drawn by Slug Signorino. Slug is Don Imus.

I wish the edit window were 10 minutes instead of 5. Sometimes it takes me a while to retype something. What bad things would happen if the edit time were doubled?
