My hair has been varying lengths (mostly long) of straight, one-length since I was 13. I am now on the wrong side of 31. I have had 2 cuts with long layers. I cut my hair to about shoulder length every few years to donate the length but that’s pretty much the extent of what I have done to my head in over 15 years.
This heat wave has had me realizing that in the last few weeks, I have only taken my hair down from its knot when it’s time to shower. I haven’t even been brushing it most days because it takes too damn long and it’s just too damn hot.
So, I’m getting it cut. I have no idea what I want to do with it. Even when it’s not hot, the most exotic thing I’ll do with my hair is a french braid once or twice a year. I don’t use any product other than shampoo or conditioner. I don’t blow dry ever. I don’t dye it. I am not a feminine girl.
I have decided to have a friend cut my hair. I am going to tell her to not shave my head and to not touch my color. Other than that, it’s all on her. I trust her to not make me look stupid, even though she has never touched my hair before.
I just hope she has an opening today or else I might shave my own head before the day is out.
I am considering doing just as you are doing. Including letting a friend do it. Mine also has been long most of my adult life. I am addicted to having it tied back, also no dyes or perms, just braid and go. When not long, mine is wavy and unruly. I am impressed with your bravery.
I am dying to know how it turns out, please do let us know!
Donate it, if you can. I’m a guy, and I used to have long hair, so I can speak with somewhat of an experienced perspective in letting go of it. It’s easier when you know it’s going to end up as a wig for some poor little girl with cancer.
I don’t know how long it’ll be when it’s done. I’ll make sure that she knows I want to donate it, if she cuts enough off. I’ll have to check the length. It’s either 10" or 12" minimum.
Unfortunately she has a full day today with colorings and a wedding party and she’s not back until Tuesday but she had one appointment free on Tuesday so I’ll be getting it done then, as long as I don’t run into a transportation issue. Today would have been perfect because I was in the city already. Oh well.
I will definitely post before and after pictures. I’m so excited. Unfortunately I have 3 days to think about it and be nervous.
I had long hair from about 5th grade until I was a junior in college. That year, I got brave and had it cut shoulder length. The following year, I got it cut short. (Maybe 4 inches at it’s longest.) Except for a slight lapse in 1987 when I let it grow almost shoulder length again, it’s been short ever since. I have a standing appointment to get it trimmed every four weeks. That and shampoo are pretty much my only hair care expenses. If I have to dress up, I might borrow a little bit of mousse or gel from someone, but that’s it. It’s wonderful.
Good luck with your new hair! Looking forward to the pictures.
I’m about to get my hair cut, too. I was trying to grow it out, but it’s long enough now to remind me why I don’t have it long - it just gets frizzy. Back to an easy, cute shorter cut.
After. It’s really not that short on the right (left in the picture). It’s just the way I flipped it before I took the picture.
It’s short and has layers but is still reserved enough so that I wont feel like a different person. Maybe next time we’ll do something more exciting but for now, this is good for me.
She had to separate my hair into 6 different ponytails in order to cut off the 10" to donate. There was too much to do in one.
Down with long hair (anything past the shoulders)!
Long hair used to be turn on. Then I dated a girl with long hair and that ended that fantasy. The hair would get trapped under a knee or elbow while doing the horizontal mombo and cause interruptions.
Also, the amount of time spent dealing with the hair was annoying. I was begining to believe there was a male conspiracy to encourage women to have long hair. 1) So they would spend untold $$ on products and 2) spend many extra man hours to deal with the hair. The result being that the women with long hair would be at a disadvantage compared to people with short hair.
A woman would have to get up earlier to spend the time to deal with the long hair to leave for work at the same time as a person with short hair.
And that got me to thinking. If the culture came to be that people were expected to go around bald or with buzz cuts, the economy would change as the demand for various hair products would go away. Everyone would have more time, use less water in the shower, use less shampoo, less conditioner, a total win for the planet!
Of course all that would be offset by an increase in razor blade and shaving cream sales.
Soooo cute! You will love it. Just wait until you shower all groggy tomorrow morning and pour your usual amount of shampoo into your hand and freak out when your hair is all gone. That’s always fun.
The postive about long hair? Who cares if you don’t get it trimmed…
Then it became too much of a hassle.
I had 18" whacked off about a month ago.
The negative about short hair? I already need it trimmed.
The weirdest thing about getting hair cut from really long to really short was the feeling of swinging your head and feeling so much LIGHTER.
It was even weirder when I got mine cut from shoulder length to pixie, because when I swung my head around I felt NOTHING AT ALL.
Heh, my boyfriend agrees, though I’m pretty sure he’s always been attracted to women with super short hair. When I first got my pixie, all of my female coworkers were all “omg, what does your boyfriend think?!?!” and I just had to laugh, because it was HIS idea!
One thing that bugged me at first was the fact that the back of my neck was exposed. I get cold really easily, and it’s super duper air conditioned at work, so the first week or so was spent with me wearing scarves and shivering a lot and going “how do dudes DO this?”
That’s a great cut, especially for someone who’s “new” to shorter locks. Kinda same “style” requirements as the long hair, without the extra washing/drying time! Mine was long, past my bra strap, for a few years before I realized I wore it up 90% of the time. I got it cut to about your new length, with bangs and a few more layers, about 2 years ago. I haven’t worn it up except for about three times since then. I got even more layers a few months ago, did a “shag” and don’t really like it. Can’t wait for it to grow out again and do something a little simpler just past the shoulders.
Thanks everyone. I’m really happy with it. I’m sure I’ll grow it long again because I can’t help myself.
I wont have the opportunity to use too much shampoo and conditioner for my first shower because I barely have enough to wash the hair I have now.
The best part about it is that it’s long enough to put the bangs up with a clip to keep them out of my face while I study and bead. I don’t mind bangs in my face but when I’m looking down for a long period of time, it drives me crazy.
Now I just need decide who to send my hair to. I can’t remember where I sent it last time but I’m thinking it might have been locks of love.
Same here! Birdman always wants my hair shorter. My stylist said she loved cutting my hair off because I didn’t spend the whole time going “Oh no, my husband is going to be so upset…”
