I have retired.

At the risk of boring those who’ve read my other posts, in May I decided I had spent enough of my life working. A variety of events, including a few heart problems, and a co-worker who tragically won’t get to retire – pushed me over the edge. After spending two weeks recovering, I asked the financial advisor lady for a final analysis of my accounts/plans. Her verdict was “You’ll get a raise when you quit – what are you waiting for?” So I turned in the separation paperwork to the company.

So Monday was my last day at work, forever. I was pleasantly surprised by my co-worker’s reactions during the last week. The company provided a (sorta) formal retirement ceremony complete with photographer, cake, catered lunch and several nice mementos to hang in my den. My coworkers provided not only lunch gatherings all week, but a happy-hour party at a local watering hole to send me off in style. I was really flattered by the number in attendance, and the genuine good wishes. I did not expect this.

So, I’m sitting here with a cup of coffee and a big grin on my face. I’m getting used to this new reality where pay isn’t tied to any action on my part. I can load up and go anywhere, with no Monday out there forcing me back.

Wish me luck.

Nope, not gonna wish you luck. I’m going to wish you a long, happy, healthy retirement instead.

Thank you! I’ll take that over luck, any day.

Enjoy!

Don’t let anyone make you feel guilty with their wisecracks. Respond only with a huge smile!

May you have a long and happy retirement, pullin!
What I want to know is what is it you’re pullin’. Should I be afraid to ask?

From one retiree (once) to another–Congratulations! Now get out there, loaf around in your slippers, clip some coupons, and consider kicking ass when you feel like it!

Tripler
I’m young. . . I got a second job.

Congratulations pullin.

I hope your retirement meets your expectations.

Heh, heh…

Actually, this and this (no pics on trailer). Used to pull this for weekend jaunts. Frequent questions from friends/relatives about “What are you pullin’ this weekend?” is the basis for my username.

I’m down to 49 weeks myself. I’m “pullin” for you and me both.

It’s my first thought of every morning. Can’t wait.

Congrats on your retirement, pullin!

Out of curiosity, how old are you? (That is, if you feel like sharing.) I just turned 50, and while I don’t yet see the light at the end of the tunnel, I can see it around the bend.

Enjoy!

I’m trying it too. It’s nice not having to wake up to an alarm, isn’t it?

Congrats to the retired Dopers! At least another three, probably five, years for me.

pullin, I hope you enjoy your retirement! mine’s still 3-4 years off, probably. I’m deeply envious of you and all the other retirees in this thread!

Enjoy! I hope it’s everything you dreamed it would be.

Retirement 1.0 for me was in July, 2011. I got bored within a year, but I think I’m ready for Retirement 2.0 come December. Check back with me around Thanksgiving and maybe I’ll know for sure.

Enjoy!

I so jealous.

Been five years for me, and I almost can’t remember working. Don’t miss it. Never bored. Enjoy!

Congratulations! Enjoy every minute.

Welcome! One of us! One of us! It’s good not only to not work, but to not do anything you don’t want to do. Or something like that. My wife has tried to coax me into doing things like writing a newsletter for her museum group. Nope, sorry, I’m not doing anything that smacks of having an obligation to produce something on a regular basis. I’ve been retired ten years now, and have never once regretted it.

Congrats! Retirement is fun. Especially when I look at the traffic in the morning and se it is someone else’s problem.
