[sub]no this is not another “why is this board so slow” thread[/sub]
Hailing all computer-literate dopers…
When I first come to the SDMB, the first two threads I open are lightning fast. When I try to open the third, the board speed slows to a paint-drying crawl. It’s entirely too consistent to be coincidence.
Is it…
A. The secret l33t society invoking the dreaded 2-thread-maximum curse?
B. The hampster is still just tired?
or
C. My computer has “issues”.
I’ve deleted cookies and temporary internet files thinking it was just a sluggish thing but it hasn’t helped.
B. sorta - we’ve got old, tired hamsters. I’ve got a DSL at work and a dial-up at home and there’s not much difference here. When the board is relatively clear of traffic, it cooks. But I sometimes go for hours when I cannot open a thread.
Many web servers only allow two simultaneous connections at once. This is most obvious when downloading large files from one web server. For example, you will select “Save As…” when downloading a file and will have two files downloading at the same time. You click on another file, but it doesn’t come up with the “Open With…” and “Save As…” options until at least one of the current downloads is finished.
If you have a fast connection, you may be able to open more than one thread at once, beacuse the page has already finished downloading by the time you open up a third one. If you have a slow connection, it may take a while for the 1st or 2nd to download, before the 3rd will download.
