I have to get glasses

As a result of the meds I’m on for my lupus, my eyesight has become increasingly bad over the last month or so. I finally went to the eye doctor today who confirmed that yes, I am indeed going blind (not literally). I’ve always had 20/20 vision, now my left is 20/60, and my right is 20/70. Legally, I shouldn’t be driving without eyewear already, because my lision is less than 20/40. If I were to go for my license, they’d fail me.

My glasses will be ready next week. C’mon…bring on the 4 eyes jokes…

This probably doesn’t sound very comforting, but you’ll get used to them pretty quickly. And being able to see properly more than makes up for any of the inconveniences. I’ve worn glasses for about thirty years now and I simply don’t give them a thought.

It could be worse, you could need hearing aids like me.

And make sure the frames match you. You might just look pretty damn cool!

Glasses for the first time eh? Its been a long time since I went down that road.

I envy you that first moment when you put them on for the first time and can “see” again. Amazing feeling, that.

Oh, and I hope this doesn’t sound trite.

I once knew someone who had lupus, and it takes amazing strength to cope with that illness… so many people know so little about it. My eyes were sure opened when I met this girl. I hope everything is going ok for you.

Oh! Make sure that you get ones with the magnets for attaching the Sun glasses lenses. They save so much time.

The weekend after I got my first pair of glasses, I went golfing with a friend. You have to realize of course that I am possibly the worlds worst golfer, and not being able to see all that terribly well actually wasn’t hurting my game any, but that’s a different subject. So of course, after we are done, I take off my glasses and put them on top of the car, open up the trunk, throw in the golf clubs, close the trunk, get in, and drive away. The more observant of you out there have already figured out which crucial step I was missing there. As I pulled out onto the main road, I hear this clunk clunk clunk off the back of the car, and realize it was my glasses, falling down from the roof. :smack: Immediately I pulled over, and vrooom the car that was behind me sped on by, so I get out picturing my brand new glasses as being smashed into oblivion on the road. Fortunately, they somehow survived the fall and did not get crushed by the car behind me, and aside from a few scratches on the frame were as good as new. At that point I was really thankful I had paid extra for scratch resistant lenses.

You’re not going to do stupid things with your glasses the first day you get them, because they are new and you are going to be constantly fiddling with them. It’s after a few days when the novelty wears off and you start to take them for granted that your mind will forget to look after them, so watch out!

The most annoying part of low powered glasses - you can see well enough without them that you notice every single smudge. And then you get OCD cleaning them glasses.

Yeesh. wipewipewipewipewipe

Is this why I’ve found it impossible to get used to my reading glasses? I’ve had them for over two years, persevered (a bit) and given up. Lots of times. Trouble is, I can read fine without them except for the really tiny print.

I’ve found an easy way to avoid losing my glasses. I take them off if I’m going to bed, so they are on the table by the bed. Or I take them off when I’m going to take a shower, so they’re on the bathroom counter. Once in a blue moon they’ll end up somewhere else (if we’re making out in the living room they can get in the way, so they go on the coffee table) but otherwise they’re in one of those two places, or they’re on my face.

Yeah, I’m doing okay right now…last month, however, was an entirely different story…

Thanks for asking
