I have to restart my iPhone to make it play through car aux port. Suggestions?

I have an iPhone XS. My car stereo an aux port. I bought one of those lightening to aux cables. If my phone is already on and I plug in, music just keeps playing through the phone speaker. If I restart the phone while plugged in, it will play through the car speakers. If I unplug the phone for any reason, I have to restart it again to play through car speakers. Anyone have a solution for this?

Restart the phone, the app, or the play button? I have to do the play button thing when streaming XM radio via my phone through the earphone jack to the aux input slot on my car radio. The phone stops when I unplug also.

The phone itself. I have to plug it in to aux, then restart it. If I just plug it in while powered on, sound only comes from the phone speaker.

Do you have a pair of headphones you can try?
Because, this behavior is not normal.
I don’t have a phone this new, but it’s possible you need to select which audio output you are using, after you plug in the adapter.

How old is your car? Can you bluetooth connect instead of using the aux cable?

I had this problem and eventually solved it by buying a new phone. Not ideal.

Try looking for a firmware update for your car. You might also consider upgrading your stereo system to work with bluetooth.

I think your lightning to aux adapter cord must be f—ed. Bluetooth adapters for cars that plug into the aux port are common.

I figured it out. After I plugged it in I went into the iPhone control center. Went to the triangle with the circles. There was a selection now available for USB 2.0. I clicked that , it spun for about a minute then had a check mark. Now it works correctly as soon as I plug in the phone.

I never knew that about iPhone. I thought it would just output to whatever was plugged into the lightening port, but I guess it has to be told to recognize and remember some devices.
