Why should people in Santa Barbara have to subject themselves to… however many members of the CA legislature don’t represent Santa Barbara?
Trump and conservatives in Congress might be pleased at the prospect of eliminating California’s 245,000 federal jobs. No doubt the new Republic of California can readily replace them.*
Yep. So much for “liberals don’t secede”.
*you might be able to join the EU.
Not so. California legislators will represent ALL Californians. All Californian’s will have a vote in every representative elected. Don’t confuse this with county or city government, which will still apply at that level.
Every legislator will be elected on an at-large basis?
Seriously. California is a donor state, paying 16 billion per year in taxes more than it receives back from the government. California’s future (independent) budget, absent military expenditures, donations (foreign aid) to other countries, maintaining foreign embassy, etc., will be in the black.
*When California becomes an independent country, or perhaps during the
process of becoming an independent country, the people of California will
choose the type of government system we want to have. Will we have a
democratic-republic like the United States with a president and a bicameral
legislature, or will we establish for ourselves a parliamentary republic with
a prime minister and a parliament? Possibly, with all our ingenuity and
imagination, we can craft an entirely unique system of governance.
However, these are questions to be decided by future elections, not by
this independence referendum. *

They’ll need OR and WA just for the water pipelines they’ll have to build, which will create thousands of jobs. Then we take over Alaska, deport all the assholes (which will seriously and significantly lower the population), and build another water pipeline. Then sell the excess to AZ at exorbitant rates.
California’s National Guard is the largest in the country, and Guardsmen swear an oath of loyalty to the state (govenor?). The US military as been relying heavily on the Guard and Reserve lately so I’m sure they’re quite well trained and equipped.
The president could tell them they are now under his command, and I guess they’d have to choose. But yes, California has quite a military, actually.
Um, dude? QUEBEC. The most left-leaning province in Canada. Instituted $5/day public daycare 20 years ago.
Seriously, this argument has been going on here for decades. We have had two referendums on the matter, and on this page alone you’ve repeated multiple Parti Quebecois arguments that have failed to convince anyone.
Form of government TBD? That’s been PQ policy. It doesn’t convince skeptics.
Will use home country’s current and passport: Doesn’t convince skeptics.
Military not needed? Doesn’t convince skeptics.
In all honesty, if you want to succeed, you could at least read what’s been done in every other region that has tried to separate and fail.
Being “in” Nevada doesn’t make you a Nevadan.
Yeah, this is a fun thread.
But this is also the SDope. A place where folks are s’posed ta be kinda smart.
So you need to keep your fantasies logically consistent.
But this idea of dual citizenship is as illogical as those whackos who claim to be “Sovereign citizens” and “freeman-on-the-land”.
“Yeah, we are citizens of the the USA, but not bound by its laws or its President.”
But I do like the idea of “The Peoples Democratic Republic of California”. Gosh, it would be real easy to make their flag—just a square of cloth colored with solid blue.
Forming the Republic into three or four states is no big deal and would cure a lot of the inequalities and friction.
I’d likely move back under the native-born clause.
Any talk of secession is just yellow bellied, whiny-assed idiocy. (yes, I am Californian and voted democrat)
There will be no secession. Californians are Americans. Americans live in a democracy. In a democracy, sometimes the other guy wins. We get another shot in 4 years. Until then, let’s all put on our big boy pants and learn to deal with it.
And a warm puppy. don’t forget the warm puppy…and the blankey!
It apparently has something to do with Chapter 11 of the United Nations charter and the US being a signatory to that charter. And something else to do with states retaining all rights not given the US by the Constitution. So it appears it’s quite possible. It really might be up to the voters in 2019.
Are you as sure of that as you were that Hillary would win?
The Supreme Court ruled just after the Civil War that secession without the “blessing” of the federal government is illegal.
As for “dual citizenship,” what stops the USA government from demanding its full share of federal income tax? It doesn’t matter where you live, or where you made your money; you’re a citizen.
And as for California’s military, does anyone honestly think that the first thing the USA government would do is demand that all of its weapons and ammunition, right down to the last .30-caliber bullet, be given back? Remember, it was the Confederates occupying Fort Sumter that started the Civil War.
He would need one, too, considering all of the people fleeing that failed nannystate trying to sneak back into a country without power blackouts and tax day IOUs.
Y’all might want to place a couple of phone calls to some people in the South Eastern part of the United States and ask just how well the idea of succession worked for them. (Hint: not very)
With the California gun laws if the succession gets ugly what are you going to fight with? Bongs and dildos?
Also you want to give Gov. Moonbeam and the legislature an EXTRA 16 billion dollars to waste? Christ the Gov is already building a high speed Cho-cho to no where. With an extra 16B they will probably try to extend the Cho-cho to Hawaii.
I don’t know what the Yes California people are smoking, but it must be some GOOD shit.
Hey don’t forget Christmas trees. Us here in Oregon are like the Christmas tree capital of the US. Can’t have Christmas without us!
