I just don't get the thong/no panty line thing

I apologize for this being quite so mundane and pointless but this is bugging me. I keep hearing people say they wear thongs to avoid panty lines. Now as far as I can see, visible panty lines are usually caused by the elastic at the top of the panties where it cuts across the rear. Thongs don’t get rid of this line-it’s still there. The only line they get rid of is the one between the glutes and the thigh that doesn’t show anyway. In fact, with a thong, you get TWO lines, one from the top of the “leghole” and one from the top of the thong itself. Now would somebody tell me what I am missing here. I have to say I have nothing personally against thongs but I certainly have seen people with “visible thong lines” and I can’t see how that is more attractive than the alternative. Come on guys (and gals) fight my ignorance!

I think you’re misunderstanding the term “panty lines.” This refers to the outline of the bottom of the panties (shown when wearing tight pants), not the waistband. Since there essentially no bottom parts to thongs, there are no panty lines.

But thongs DO have a bottom-it’s just up higher. And I can still see it when people wear tight pants. What am I missing? (And, more important, why do I care???)

Well, a lot of the time, women wear thongs because the lines are “more attractive” than the lines that you get from regular underwear. Personally, I’ve had less problems with visible panty lines with thongs than I’ve had with regular underwear. Plus, for some reason it’s more comfortable for me to wear a thong or g-string for the fact that I know that my underwear’s staying where I put it: I hate when regular underwear creeps up my asscrack. It’s so weird!

The point of a thong (or G-String as they call it here), apart from being weird looking, is to follow the form of the body, and have the edges basically stay hidden in teh normal folds and creases of the biody, therefore be mostly invisible in pants.

For some reason, women don’t like the idea of the fact that they are wearing underwear is obvious. (They make no attempts to hide their bra, which is usually even more visible - go figure).

Yet we all know 99% of women do wear underwear so I can’t figure out why this fact should be a secret.

Im with you pyschobunny, no panty lines as a reason to wear a tonga is a thin line excuse! Unless it is a very flat elastic it will show no matter how hi cut.

Just admit it thong wearers you like the stimulation of a piece of fabric held tight against your crotch!

My friend, perhaps if you peer a bit closer at the rear end of the woman (or man, to be fair) in question, the answer to your dilemma will reveal itself to you in a shower of brilliantly-colored motes of light.

Well, my thongs are essentially a triangle with three skinny elastics, the top one of which usually rides under the waist band of my pants.

Trust me - there is **NO[/] panty line - even under tight white pants.

The elastic stiumlation of my ass crack is just a bonus…

The part in back varies in width from thong to thong. In some it is very thin and does not show at all. You also can’t feel it when it’s this thin (well I can’t). The thicker ones are terrible, you still get the line and the feeling of a wedgie.

If the thong doesn’t fit right you also get the line and wedgie feeling. They need to fit perfectly for there to be no lines. If they are too big they bunch and then you have lines.

Yes, I wear thongs to avoid panty lines. I also make every attempt to hide my bra strap as well. I have a few of those convertable bras so I can have a hidden strap no matter what I’m wearing.

Shucks, I’ve tried just about every variation of panties out there and still get lines. Not only that, but they all tend to crawl up my rear and manage to chafe my poor anus. Which has left me with only two alternatives… panty hose or nothing at all. The nothing-at-all is definately the most comfortable option.

Any pics? (yup, ready for the bashing)

Ok-I think the problem is one of fit-you need a thong that rides up high enough to be hidden under a waistband. It still seems to me that you get fewer lines from a full “grannie panty” or no underwear at all, however.
P.S. FWIW-I have an abundance of X-chromasomes (2 at last count) but unfortunately also an abundance of derriere that makes a thong likely to cut off circulation to my legs, so maybe I’m just jealous.

Ah-ha–You’ve touched upon my pet ick. I hate bulgy bra lines, where the elastic of a woman’s bra is so tight it separates her back and sides into bulgy fatty looking sections clearly delineated by the bra. Even scrawny woman get this, so it really isn’t a fat thing, it just looks like one. I think it looks worse than panty lines; for the most part, I could care less about other people’s panty lines. But I hate bras. Hate, hate, hate the hateful things.

I never wore thongs until this year, and only because a close guy friend of mine used to talk about “VPL” (Visible Panty Lines). It took some time getting used to, but now I can wear anything and not have VPL.

The top line should not show, it should be by the waistline of your pants. If you get one that is too small for you, the lines will show all over, no matter what.

And whoever has a thong whose elastic is stimulating them, fess’ up! I think we’d all like to know what brand that is, because mine don’t do a damn thing for me.

I wear thongs, but not for the panty line thing. I wear them for comfort, and rarely wear anything tight enough to worry about panty lines, anyway.

(it feels so odd calling it a thong  I just call it my “g”… I’d never place a flip-flop around my pink bits. )

Sounds like what you have there is a G-string, not a thong.

[sorry, ex-exotic dancer here. Where I worked, thongs were ok, g-strings were illegal.]

I should correct that… thongs were mandatory, g-strings were illegal. And the thong back had to be at least an inch wide, legally.

The simple fact is that the granny panties required to get the same effect as a thong just aren’t sexy. Sexy clothes require sexy undies.

Also, you’re forgetting about the VPL from the seam of the crotch piece. Horrible thing! In thongs, it’s totally hidden.

Frankly, I don’t think thongs look particularily sexy. I think my favourite is bikini-style underwear, with about a 2-inch band at the sides (check out [url=www.victoriassecret.com]Victoria’s Secret to find what I mean)

Eh - you say tomato, I say tomaaato…

I actually have both types, but I don’t get panty lines with either. I find that in order to get them to fit correctly, I have to go up a size, otherwise they dig in in a rather unfortunate way - perhpas this is the problem that some people are having.
