OK, ladies: tell me about thongs

Sigh.

I need new underwear. Mine have become saggy and the elastic is failing. I’m cheap about underwear, but I don’t like the cotton kind that come in bags, and everything over here is expensive, so usually I wait until I get back to the states to buy new panties at TJ Maxx, but here I am and I probably won’t be back home for another year, so I need to order some underwear.

I’ve tried thongs in the past. For a whole week, i suffered with a wad of material up my butt crack, and then gave up. Still, women, women I trust, tell me that thongs are the way to go, that they’re so comfortable, blah blah blah.

So convince me. Are thongs really the ultimate panty? What should I look for in a comfortable thong? Any tips on getting started?

My experience with thongs seems to be the same as the OP’s. I would love some enlightenment, as well. The only solution I came up with was to buy a bigger size, but then I had to pull the sides all the way up to my waist, and that was just silly.

Renee, are you in a place where you can’t get stuff shipped or it’s too expensive to ship?

Really, if I’m wearing something that I don’t want visible pantylines, I just go commando. Thongs don’t seem to “protect” the outer clothing, anyway, and where I’ll get a few wearings from a pair of jeans with regular panties, I have to wash them each time I wear them whether I use a thong or nothing, so I just don’t see the point.

My husband is military, and we’re stationed on Okinawa. A lot of places will ship to us (victoria’s secret is one) and I can buy some things here on the base, just the selection isn’t good. Off-base, anyone bigger than a size 2 will have serious problems finding any sort of clothing to fit. So I was thinking of just ordering, since I can’t try on underwear at the store, anyway.

I dropped my website in the bra thread. But I will post it here again www.lavielamour.com Good selection of thongs and we can ship it out to you quick!

The only thongs I wear pretty much are all from Victoria’s secret - the cotton v-string as seen here: http://www2.victoriassecret.com/commerce/onlineProductDisplay.vs?namespace=productDisplay&origin=onlineProductDisplay.jsp&event=display&prnbr=CL-231104&page=1&cgname=OSPTYVSTZZZ&rfnbr=1922

Whenever I bought “cheap” thongs with the standard crappy seaming and elastic, they were very uncomfortable. You always just felt em up there. But the stuff from VS, at least the stuff you find on the “Pink” table, hasn’t done me wrong. I honestly don’t feel these. The elastic and material/stitches are very soft and these underwear hold up too, much better than any underwear you get in a pack at WalMart. I lost one pair to my old shitty washing machine because they got crazily tangled into a towel but my normal machine now has never had an issue. So the 5/$25 at VS is a good deal - they won’t fall apart.

However, VS sends out those coupons for free panties all the time, and the ones you can get with those coupons suck compared to the Pink collection. Only issue might be is that everyone doesn’t love stripey polka dotted brightly colored underwear, the Pink collection doesn’t have many solids. And they are moving more and more towards boyshort and hipster type underwear (which make your ass look great, but are sometimes less comfortable because you can feel em) so they have less thongs than they used to.

But yeah I pretty much wear thongs everyday. I do like the new hipster and boyshort styles because they are really cute, but actually wearing them all day with jeans is less comfortable than with a thong.

My experience is with Victoria’s Secret Body by Victoria v-strings.

I don’t touch their thongs – they have a wider strap in the back, more fabric to bunch up. But the Body by Victoria line has all sorts of solids and are microfiber, so very soft and comfortable against the skin, and it lies very flat (short of twisting the straps or whatever).

I’ll wear a v-string for an evening of dress up, and for that purpose it’s just fine. Because the strap in the back is narrow, I pretty much don’t notice it unless I take it in my head to pay attention to it.

However I’ve tried wearing them all day as well, and invariably (TMI)

my rectum and perineum get sore from chafing

which presumably happens from having to pull the thong out from between my butt cheeks every time I go to the bathroom. I also get somewhat annoyed that I have to “arrange” my thong after every time I go, instead of just pulling them up like normal undies. So for everyday wear, I wear normal underwear.

So what’s the difference between a V string and a thong?

A thong is what you’d normally picture as a thong…a panty with a very thin strip of fabric in the back…

A V-string is, literally, a string of fabric in the back, in place of that narrow piece of fabric. It “turns into” a panty at the crotch. I’ve only had a couple V strings, because they were included when I bought a corset/teddy, etc…

I’ve never worn them as anything but “date night” lingerie, b/c I don’t see the point…I only wear underwear under skirts, so when I do, I want the most invisible underwear possible. Victoria’s Secret and Gap both have nice “invisible” underwear…VC calls it “second skin” as I recall and I can’t recall what Gap calls it, but basically it’s a panty without ANY seams at all except in the crotch area. So it pretty much vanishes under clothing…even thin evening-wear. If I’m wearing a cocktail dress I’ll wear their invisible thongs. If I’m just wearing a normal skirt I’ll wear their invisible boy-short panties…I like those because they don’t ride up the way “bikini” or “high waist” panties do.

The lack of seams also makes them extremely comfortable, I should mention. Which is why that’s the only kind of panties I own.

As far as thongs go…yeah, I’ve heard that they are “super comfortable” and I agree that the right thong is forgettable while you’re wearing it…but I’ve never chosen to wear one when I didn’t have to. YMMV.

I prefer the wider fabric to the string. But actually I’m not doing thongs at the moment. If I could drop some weight I might take them up again.

A too small or cheaply made thong will feel like it’s going to cut you in two, but a good quality, well fitting thong is unnoticable. Several years ago I found some low rise thongs at Macy’s. I wish I could remember the brand, I’d buy nothing else. Try looking for low rise thongs, that solves the problem of having the sides up to the ribs without going too small. These days I’m really partial to Calvin Klein panties, mostly the seamless hipsters, but they have great thongs, too.

Obligatory link to Music Video(MTV Censored version) <– still not appropriate for many workplaces

Thongs are pretty much like any underwear–if it’s the right cut and size for your particular ass, it’s fine, and if not it’s a constant misery. I’m not particularly a big thong fan, myself. I’ve got a few that are great for hanging around not doing much, but if I’m up and moving a lot they start…riding up and chafing. That makes them uncomfortable and inappropriate for days when I need to things like go to work, or take care of the yard and garden, or clean the house. Which means I wear a thong maybe once or twice a month.

My personal preference is for what they call the “sporty bikini.” They’re cut like the swimsuit bottoms the beach volleyball players wear–like a string bikini, except with a nice wide waistband.

CrazyDCatLady–I wear string bikinis, too! At least, Hanes calls them string bikinis. The waist band is quite thin but there’s plenty of butt coverage. It is low rise so you can wear them with low rise jeans. (Though they don’t eliminate vis. panty line.) They’re incredibly comfy and practical, and cheap, and I love them to bits. What brand do you wear?

No, these are distinct from the string bikinis. They come up a bit higher, and instead of a thin string running from the corner of the front piece to the corner of the back piece, there’s a wide elastic (about 3/4" or so) all the way around. Hanes and Fruit of the Loom both make them, and I usually buy whichever brand has that style in my size when I pick up a bag 'o drawers at Walmart. They’re hard to find these days, though; with the rise of the boyshorts, they’ve become rather unpopular. You wanna talk about underpants I don’t like, boyshorts are it. They come down on my legs in the front, and there is significant cheek peekage in the back. Tres annoying.

I’ve never been brave enough for a thong, but Fruit Of The Loom’s newish lowrise briefs are the most comfortable panties I’ve ever owned (other than a pair from VC.)

I wear thongs and only thongs, and have since, oh, 1990 or so. I concur with those above who’ve said that if a thong is uncomfortable or chafing, it’s probably either the wrong size or badly made, with fabric or elastic that doesn’t give enough, or cut so it falls on you funny. I like mostly-cotton ones and get them one size larger than I would get in full-butt coverage. Normal full-butt coverage underwear always seems to get all bunched up someplace uncomfortable or unflattering on me and I end up either tugging on it or thinking about tugging on it too often for polite company.

Frederick’s of Hollywood used to make great cotton thongs (they call them “Rio” I think), but they’ve changed 'em in the last three or four years, and now they fall apart too fast. The elastic edging comes unraveled. I tried a cotton VC thong once and hated it; too small, or maybe just not stretchy enough. I’ve also tried maybe three different brands of microfiber or performance type fabric ones and been underwhelmed, mostly because they weren’t cut in a way that made sense. For me, anyway.

Good luck in your quest. May the Lingerie Goddesses be with you.

Same company, same “line” (so same material, same expected quality level) and same size, the difference in comfort and wearability between thongs and regular panties is still noticeable enough to me that I will not wear a thong, period. I really just don’t see the point.

I’ve actually gone the other way now with boyleg short style panties, and I’m very happy.

Are thong swimsuits lkely to be popular this sum They seem to have limited appeal.mer?

I can’t remember the last time I saw a thong swimsuit/bikini out there. Early 90s maybe? And that was on the TeeVee (channel surfing across Baywatch, I think).

Huh?

To me this suggests that either:

  1. You are wearing a size that is far too large, or
  2. You have an odd body shape (very petite, very short-waisted, …).

Full-coverage underwear should just sit there, in quiet contemplation, and not move anywhere.

Never been able to wear a thong, myself. They get into very uncomfortable places: (warning: waaaay TMI!)

After about five seconds the crotch region always seems to work itself between the labia… leaving the outlying areas thereof to chafe against whatever else you are wearing. Can’t go without underwear for the same reason.
