Not on the street or anything. It was already my money, part of what I got from selling my boat some time ago. But I had lost it. Worse, I thought that it had been stolen. Last I remembered it was sitting in an envelope in my desk drawer and then one day I noticed that it wasn’t.
Last night my closet door stuck on something, and I pulled out an overnight bag with some clothes in it. I pulled the clothes out and threw them in the laundry hamper, then checked the other pockets. Bam! Envelope with money in it. I have no memory of packing this bag. Apparently I was planning a hell of a weekend somewhere.
The money is really awesome, but the best thing is that I no longer worry that one of my friends is a thief. Also, I found one of my favorite shirts in the overnight bag.
I’ve randomly lost $20 here and there, and it’s a nice surprise to find it later, but this is by far the most I’ve ever managed to misplace at one time.
I’d report it to the police. If you don’t go claim it after 30 days, it’s yours. But if you then go back and claim it, it’s yours too! A win win if I’ve ever heard of one!
Found money is too much fun, when you know you get to keep it. I once found 5 bucks in an old pair of jeans and on a whim blew it on scratch-offs. Then won 25 from them. (I kept that.)
I wonder if anyone’s ever done undercover testing of a police station like that: Deposit some valuable with them, state where and how you found it (in a sufficiently obscure way that someone would be very unlikely to claim it), and see if you end up getting it back…
