I just found Metroid for NES! One problem...

One problem: Is it possible to restart the game from stratch? I couldn’t on Metroid for Gameboy.

Also, I saw two copies, one with a scene from game on cartidge and one with an drawing of Samus on it. Is there a difference?

I don’t think Metroid was a battery game…it used passwords…you HAVE to restart from scratch if you don’t know the right passwords.

Tengu is correct. As for your second question…I have no idea.

The ones with a scene from the game are older, all the NES cartridges used to have images from the game for an illustration. I don’t know if there are any differences between the versions but I doubt there are.

I have a version of Metroid that’s fairly old, and it’s got the “scene from the game” on it. If the drawing of Samus has the gigantic spherical shoulderpads, it probably means that that cartridge was made after the Game Boy Metroid came out (and a new bunch of art was created).

I don’t know if there’s anything different in the programming between the two.

The one with a drawing of Samus on it was a later re-release of the game in the early 1990s, near the end of the NES’s run, as part of the “Classic Series,” along with The Legend of Zelda, The Adventure of Link, and Punch-Out!. These re-releases are exactly the same as the original releases, with the exception of Punch-Out!, which replaced Mike Tyson with another fictional boxer from Philadelphia called Mr. Dream (seeing as Tyson was in prison at the time and could not renew his licensing agreement with Nintendo.)

Samus Aran hunts again! Thanks guys.

Actually, you can erase saves on Metroid for Gameboy. At the title screen, you can choose from three saves. By pressing left and right on the D-pad, choose the one you want; Start 1, 2, or 3. To erase any of the saves, press down on the D-pad with that save selected. The word “clear” will appear below “start”. While holding the D-pad down, press start to erase the save. Since I’m at work, I’m doing this from memory. I shouldn’t be off by much, though.

Eagerly awaiting Metroid Prime,
DrP

You can always download the NESticle emulator for PC or MAC and download the game for your home computer, as well. That’ll start from the beginning. I don’t know how legal it is (the disclaimers on the pages say that you must delete it within 24 hours unless you actually own the cartridge, but that doesn’t sound too reliable to me).
