Er crap no edit.
$4 should $4 per gallon. It takes about a gallon to get there and back
I wish my gas bill was only $4 total though!

Don’t worry, it will trickle down to you. Someone will hire you to mow their lawn with that money. Then you can take the left over gas and make a molotov cocktail and BURN THE SYSTEM DOWN!

[QUOTE=Really Not All That Bright]
Who the hell can afford to start fires with gas at ~$4 a gallon?

Courtier: Your Majesty, the peasants are in revolt because they cannot afford the gasoline to burn down our gated communities.

They should quit school and work at McDonald’s.

He doesn’t have to quit school, if he works on weekends and summers, he’ll bring in way more than 3 grand, even if he’s making minimum wage. Many, many students, especially older students like the OP, hold jobs of some sort or another to cover expenses while going to school.
I’m just somewhat stunned that a 28 year old student who is struggling to pay his bills has only managed to make $3,000 of gross income in an entire year, then is mad at the government for not bailing him out.

Maybe he takes summer classes and takes enough classes that if he worked on the weekends his sanity would no longer be intact.

Maybe. That’s entirely his choice, though. Nobody is forcing him to have a schedule that prevents him from holding a part time job.
He’s an adult, he’s not some 18 year old kid who doesn’t know shit from shinola. He needs look at his plans and figure out a way to go to school and keep gas in his car. This $300 payout isn’t going to fix the problem, and he’ll be in the same situation 6 months from now.

Isn’t the goal of the payout to stimulate the economy? Wouldn’t the economy benefit from a more educated work force? Wouldn’t helping him with gas help him get educated?
Not only that but you’re making the assumption he can just drop some classes. Some classes are only offered rarely.
OMG btw
google ad for this thread "gay military dating’.
Send in an army of hot hot mocho men to get that rebate!

Uh oh, you touched one of the many SDMB Third Rails…just like I did, when I commented that I’m paying more than the average gross income of the US in Federal taxes, but got jack fucking squat back, because obviously I need to, as they say, “die yuppie scum.”

We have programs coming out of our proverbial ears to help people get educated. that’s not the point of this program, and it’s practically useless for that purpose.
I’m making the assumption that his schedule isn’t or doesn’t have to be be so ridiculously stacked that he can’t handle a 10-20hr/wk job.

Still since it’s being paid by deficit spending won’t he be paying for everyone else’s rebate out of his taxes when he graduates? The money borrowed to pay this won’t pay it’s self back you know.
Also some places it’s really hard to find a job. I’ve been trying to find one here for months.

You mentioned Michigan earlier, so I’ll assume you’re in that state. So am I, and I am well aware that the economy here has sucked balls for years now.
That still doesn’t excuse why he couldn’t make 3K. It’s a LOT easier to get a small part time job around here. To make 3K, all he’d have to do is work 10 hours a week at $6/hr. Even around here I could do that by applying at all the high turnover places, like McDonalds.
It’s the better paying* and full-time jobs that are near non-existant. You can still get a part time McJob relatively easily, especially being in school; it’s the people who aren’t who have a harder time (since it’s more likely that they’ll leave the second something better comes along, where a college kid is more likely to just stay where they can get gas and beer money).
10 freaking hours a week at $6 an hour. Even in Michigan, it wouldn’t take more than a couple of weeks, a month TOPS, to find that.

Yeah Michigan, St Joe county here. Source of the American Axel strike… Don’t hate!
Some parts of the state where hit pretty bad. I put in apps at all the local fast food places. I call to check. No interest. I have a decent work history. I don’t know. The local Mcdonald’s I heard was hiring so planning on putting in an app on my way to school today.
Wish me luck!
dang it gotta proof read before submitting…
Meant to add when I applied at at them before it was before I started classes so hoping your words hold true.

I haven’t gotten my stimulus check yet, so I still think Bush is an ass.
I believe one has the option of declaring undocumented income, like…say…$51 in babysitting money or such. Not sure I’d want to sit on hold with the IRS hotline to confirm that one, though.
