Well, at that point it didnt hurt at all. Felt much like taking out an earring, except in your mouth. I had healed up, but the pesky little buggers wouldn’t dissolve like they were supposed to.
Agreed. The stitches actually hurt a lot more than pulling them out; doing so was a relief.
Awww you poor thing! I had mine out 4 years ago, and my Ma just had hers out last week. If you haven’t had any swelling yet, do be mentally prepared for it just in case. I was very very swollen, and so is Ma now. I found I started to heal quicker when I started taking a fizzy mineral/vitamin supplement (like Berocca), and arnica.
If you do swell up don’t let them take any pictures. They will haunt you like poo on a shoe.
Yeah, I had a tooth pulled and had stitches, and ended up doing the same thing. The dentist was very sweet and she talked me through the whole ordeal, and then she says, “These stitches will dissolve on their own. And if they don’t, you can just pull them out.” I was already white as sheet (I’m scared to death of dentists, and she hauled a tooth out of my head! With plier thingies! While I watched! I feel faint just remembering) and I looked at her like this:
But sure, in a couple weeks time, it’s not sore, it doesn’t hurt, and you’ll be worrying any leftover stitches with your tongue so often that you’ll end up saying, “All right, enough of this, I’m going in there and taking this junk out myself.” And you will. And it won’t hurt. It will feel weird, don’t force it, but you’ll get it.
My sympathies, dare_devil. A mouthful of hurting is no fun. Enjoy your V8, I like that stuff, too. I ate a lot of smooth ice cream when I had my one measly tooth pulled, that might be a nice treat? Avoid anything with chunks or nuts or fruit pieces, of course. I got tired of Jell-O, fast. But that could be just me.
I had all 4 of mine out in the dentist’s office and was awake for the whole thing.
The laughing gas and valium helped though, and I never got swollen at all.
I had a really easy time with the recovery.
I only ever got one. I had it pulled by a regular dentist about thirty years ago. It cost me $25.00 and never bothered me at all.
My daughter, OTOH, had four very painful extractions. Damn near killed my pocketbook.
Plus, I lurves me some spicey V-8.
It’s better to have them out even if it hurts for a while. I had all 4 (all impacted) removed at once. I was given something that knocked me out for it. I don’t remember what it was, but I do remember asking for some to take home with me.
My wonderful boyfriend at the time made me homemade tomato/macaroni soup so I was able to eat that night. I hope you feel better soon.
Remember I said I felt great yesterday? Well, today, I feel like shit. I woke up, looked in the mirror and thought, “Holy shit, I gained twenty pounds overnight!” My friends were joking around and calling me a hamster. They wanted to take pictures of me, but I remembered that somebody on this thread said not to let anybody take pictures because they will haunt me forever. I had to leave drama club extra early because I was so dizzy and I’m so hungry and upset that I can’t eat anything solid. And when I got home a minute ago, I went to the washroom and discovered that it’s that time of the month for me.
I’m sorry if that post just did not make any sense at all. I’m really tired and I’m going to have some Korean congee and go to sleep.
Hope you feel a little better when you wake up, dare_devil. Sleep is probably the best thing you can do right now. Sorry for your monthly - at least when you begin to feel less sore, the period will be going away, too (I hope). Though right now it’s got to suck. Take it easy, just take care of you right now.
That brings back memories. I too felt worse the second day than the first. I had my surgery done under local anesthesia only, with the surgeon giving more novocaine whenever I grunted; I probably had 10-12 injections all told. This was fine for the surgery, but every single injection site developed into a nice bruise overnight, and they all coalesced into one big mouthful of swollen soreness. Bleagh.
I had one taken out while awake last summer and I had the same experience during the procedure as ryobserver. I think that dentist might have gotten C’s in his anesthetic courses, because that guy couldn’t numb to save his life. He had to give me a million shots and then when he went in for the kill, it felt like my entire body was hooked up to a current of electricity. I swear I was about to hit the ceiling. In fact, the experience was bad enough that I just stopped going to that guy.
Now I have two wisdom teeth remaining, crumbling to pieces and I have to find a new guy (or woman, thank you) to get them out. In fact, I just decided yesterday that I have to get it done soon, regardless. I won’t put it off any longer.
I had some Chinese take-out beef with black bean sauce for dinner just now. My mom cut it up so much that the stuff was practically blended. And I couldn’t even chew. I just had to put some in my mouth with some rice and swallow it. But it tasted sooo good. It was kind of painful, though and now my gums are throbbing a little. And my mom is letting me go home after my first two classes tomorrow because I’ve got quizzes in those classes.
I’m so glad the dental surgeon put me completely under. I don’t think I would’ve been able to take it if he had given me only local.
I got general for mine in 99 (during a hurricane, which knocked out the power to my pharmacy) and then turned the teeth I was able to keep into cufflinks, which I wear every Halloween. Good luck and no sucking lest ye get dry socket, which sucks, no pun intended.
Er…so how do I know if I have dry socket? I can’t really see my gums in the mirror and I’m too scared of any pain I might experience if I do anything else…so I’m not doing anything to my gums, I hope. My mother is making me rinse with salt water starting today. Joy…
I was off for a whole week after my operation. I really think your mother is taking things too quickly. And it was fluids only for the first few days.
Poor you. My friend’s face puffed up and turned green from bruising when she got her teeth taken out. And then they changed over the weeks to a lovely shade of brown, then purple, then yellow. My dentist says I have a pair lurking beneath my gums on my lower jaw. I hope they never come out.
What is dry socket, and why can’t you drink from straws and oh my god I’m terrified they’re going to rip my mouth open to take my teeth out and I’ll never be able to eat food again… <pantpantpant>
I shouldn’t come into threads like this before I’ve gone to see the dentist, should I?
Holy crap! That is the best idea EVER!!
I only had my two top wisdom teeth. Both were coming straight in but had to be removed since my jaw was too small. I got some novacaine, he ripped them out, and I went home. All I needed was two Tylenol later on.
I got to miss school again today! I had the nicest nap ever and then I went online and read some stuff about dry socket. And, uh…it scared me, to say the least. And the swelling is all on my left cheek, for some reason. So, I look like someone punched me really hard right there. My mom assured me that after today, the swelling will go down. So yay for that.
I haven’t gone number 2 since Monday. That’s kind of bad, isn’t it?
